The top notes you need to know about Spartan hockey
• Michigan State heads to South Bend for the final regular-season series against Notre Dame. The Spartans are 75-59-16 all-time against the Irish and are 29-33-11 in games played in South Bend. The Irish are 10-21-1 on the year, and split last weekend's series on the road at Wisconsin (3-7, 6-1). At 22-6-4, the Spartans are fourth nationally in wins, and tied for the fewest losses of any team in the country.
• Minnesota (46 points) is two points ahead of MSU (44) in the standings as the final weekend will determine the league's champion for the second straight season. The Spartans are four points ahead of third-place Ohio State (40 points) and own tiebreakers against both the Gophers and the Buckeyes. MSU is 10-3-2 (.700) at Munn, 8-3-2 (.693) in road venues, and a perfect 4-0 in neutral-site contests.
• Junior Hobey candidate Isaac Howard brings a five-game point streak (2-4-6) into the weekend, and has delivered 22 goals and 45 points in MSU's 32 games. He remains tied for the national lead in points (45) and points per game (1.41), and is third in goals (22), fourth in goals per game (0.69), and 18th in assists per game (0.69). He is a +17 on the season, which is fourth among Big Ten forwards and 17th among Division I forwards overall. Howard has scored 19 of his goals at even strength - none of Howard's 22 goals are empty-net tallies or scored with an extra attacker, and three have come on the power play.
• Trey Augustine is one of just 31 full-time starting goaltenders in the nation (75% of his team minutes or more). He leads the B1G in wins (15, T-10th NCAA), is tied for first among B1G goalies in save percentage (.925, T-13th NCAA), is second in the league in GAA (2.10, 14th NCAA), games played (25), minutes played (1515:36), and saves (654). Among the full-time starting goaltenders in the country, Augustine owns the second-fewest losses (6), and among that group ranks fifth in GAA, sixth in save percentage, and has allowed 48 goals, the fifth fewest among full-time starters. Augustine and the Spartans have not lost back-to-back games in 2024-25.
• Karsen Dorwart has points in each of his weekend series this year, including a goal and an assist against Penn State last weekend. He has a 10-14-24 scoring line (third in both goals and points) and he owns a +17 rating. Twenty of his 24 points have come in Conference play. He shares the team lead in power play points with Matt Basgall and Howard (4-6-10), and is the team leader in power play goals.
• Tommi Männistö teamed up with Dorwart on a shorthanded marker in Saturday's game, the Finn's third goal of the season. He is one point shy of his 10 from his freshman season, and he is a +13 with 13 blocked shots (third among forwards). Both PK stalwarts, Männistö leads the Spartans in shorthanded shots on goal (7), while linemate Tiernan Shoudy has six. Shoudy tied his single-season career best with his sixth goal of the year last Friday.
