Spartans Place Fifth at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State's men's golf team shot a 4-over par 868 over three rounds and finished in sixth place among 14 teams at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the PGA Tour's Pathway to Progression in collaboration with the Golf Coaches Association of America and co-host Central Michigan University at Silverado Country Club in Napa, California.
The Spartans shot a 3-over par 291 in round one, 4-under par 284 in round two, and closed round three on day two shooting a 5-over par 293. With a 4-under par 284 in round two, Michigan State was one of six schools to have at least one under-par round in the tournament.
The tournament had an overall average round score of 75.00, and the par-5 holes on 17 and 18 carried an average score of 4.86 and 4.73.
Tohoku Fukushi University dominated the field, shooting a 23-under par 841 and having the top two finishers (Koichiro Furuse, 10-under par 206, and Kaito Sato, 8-under par 208). In second was Santa Clara, shooting a 17-under par 847. Third was BYU, finishing 5-under par 859, backing a tournament-best team round score of 16-under par 272. Nihon University placed fourth, firing a 1-over par 865, and rounding out the top five was San Francisco, shooting a 2-over par 866. Co-host Central Michigan finished in 13th place shooting a 66-over par 930.
The Spartans finished sixth at 4-over par 868 (291-284-293).
Junior Caleb Bond recorded his third top-10 finish of the season after finishing in a tie for 10th place, shooting a 2-under par 214 (72-69-73). Bond carries a scoring average of 72.26 on the season.
Sophomore Lorenzo Pinili finished in a tie for 12th place after shooting a 1-under par 215 (72-72-71). Pinili's third-round 1-under par 71 marked his fourth under-par round of the season.
Freshman Drew Miller shot a 2-over par 218 (71-71-76) over the 54-hole tournament, leaving him in a three-way tie for 19th place. Miller collected two under-par rounds on day one, bringing his season total to four. Finishing tied for 19th marked the second-best finish of Miller's career (T-3rd at Colleton River Collegiate).
Sophomore Lucas Acevedo shot a 5-over par 221 (76-72-73) to finish tied for 29th place. After shooting a 4-over par 76 in round one, Acevedo improved his scores in rounds two and three (even-par 72, 1-over par 73).
Freshman Julian Menser rounded out the lineup for the Spartans, finishing in a tie for 68th place, shooting a 20-over par 236.

The Spartans will next hit the road Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, to compete in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C.
