MSU’s late rally comes up short.
MSU had two on with the tying run at the plate when the Spartan rally and the game ended.
Michigan State is now 16-8 overall on the season, while Notre Dame moves to 13-9.
The Spartans and Irish have split the last six meetings, while also going 4-4 in the last eight match-ups, as MSU still holds an 83-61 all-time series lead. Wednesday was just the third time in the last seven meetings between MSU and Notre Dame that the home team won, and was also only the fourth meeting in the last 11 that was decided by more than one run.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the second inning, before the Spartans clawed back, getting a run back in the top of the third and two more in the sixth. MSU mounted its rally in the ninth, plating three runs and forcing two Irish pitching changes before the comeback came up short.
"I think it's a real shame, I think we wasted an opportunity tonight, a really good opportunity, and so for the third time this year, we've given up nine runs in one inning," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "So I'll take that on me, as the coach, I obviously haven't figured out a way to stop the other team from scoring nine runs in one inning. I thought we were ready to play today. Clearly we weren't, and we continue to make the same mistakes that we've made in games that we have given up big innings."
Wednesday was the thirdtime MSU has yielded nine runs in an inning, and in all eight of its losses, MSU's opposition has had at least one inning with four or more runs.
"At the same time, we need to continue to work and try to be better, but we wasted an opportunity tonight, and that's a shame, and it's something that our seniors are never going to have a chance to play at Notre Dame again, and I guess that's on me, so myself and my staff will work harder tonight and tomorrow to be better for Illinois this weekend," Boss said.
MSU now turns its attention to hosting its Big Ten Conference home opening series this weekend, welcoming Illinois to East Lansing for a three-game series, scheduled for Friday-Sunday.
Senior first baseman Will Shannon was 2-for-5 Wednesday night, while junior infielder Jacob Anderson and senior outfielder Nick Williams were both 1-for-2. Junior infielder Randy Seymour and senior catcher Noah Bright were both 1-for-4, and senior pinch-hitter Sam Busch had an two-run single in his lone at bat.
Seymour and N.Williams had an RBI apiece, along with sophomore infielder Ryan McKay and senior outfielder JT Sokolove, each with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Shannon, Seymour, Dresselhouse, Bright, senior pinch-runner Griffin Brown and sophomore pinch-hitter Parker Picot all scored a run apiece.
On the mound, sophomore starter Ryan Szczepaniak went 1.0 IP, yielding seven runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout, being dealt the loss and is now 0-1 on the season. Sophomore Garrett Brewer went 1.0 IP with two runs on two hits, with three strikeouts. Sophomore Tate Farquhar went 1.0 IP with two walks, senior Zach Maxey went 1.0 with two Ks and one hit, senior George Viebrock III threw 2.0 IP with one K and one BB. Sophomore Gavin Moczydlowsky went 1.0 IP with a walk and punchout, and junior Tommy Szczepanski threw 1.0 IP with one K and two BB.
Notre Dame jumped out early plating nine runs on eight hits in the second inning.
The Spartans got a run back in the third, as Bright led off with a double down the right-field line, moving to third on a single from Anderson. Two batters later, Sokolove flew out to right, but was deep enough for the sacrifice fly to drive in Bright.
MSU played two more runs in the sixth stanza with a two-out rally. Shannon reached on an infield single, beating out a slow-roller to third. After a hustle play in moving up to second on a wild pitch, Shannon was driven in by an RBI double down the left-field line by Seymour. N.Williams followed with a single up the middle to plate Seymour to close MSU within 9-3.
The Spartans didn't go quietly into the brisk, dark, South Bend night, as N.Williams got hit by pitch to lead off the inning, and was pinch-run for by Brown. Dresselhouse drew a walk and two batters later, Picot also drew a walk to fill the bases full of Spartans.
McKay flew out to right for a sac fly to drive in Brown. Sokolove followed by getting hit by pitch, adding to his Big Ten lead with his 13th HBP this season. After a Notre Dame pitching change, Busch pinch hit and knocked a two-run single up the middle to dive in Dresselhouse and Picot and pull the Spartans within 9-6, before a strikeout ended the MSU rally and the game.
