Inclement weather in forecast shuffles Spartans’ B1G opening weekend action.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State baseball's Big Ten Conference home-opening series against Illinois at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium has been altered due to inclement weather in the East Lansing forecast for this weekend.
Michigan State and Illinois will now play a doubleheader on Friday, March 28 starting at 12:02 p.m. ET, with game two slated to start roughly 45 minutes after the completion of game one.
Saturday's series finale will now start at 12:02 p.m. ET.
MSU is ranking among others receiving votes in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll, and has a 16-8 overall record and a 3-3 B1G mark.
Michigan State coming off a 9-6 loss at Notre Dame Wednesday night, as the Spartans got down big early, before a late comeback came up short. Last weekend, the Spartans won a weekend series at Penn State for the first time since 2016, doubling up the Nittany Lions, 10-5, in Sunday's rubber match and series finale. MSU won Friday's series opener, 4-0, before the Nittany Lions came back with an 11-5 win over the Spartans on Saturday, in which MSU had a 5-1 lead, but relinquished the lead and were overtaken by PSU.
Illinois is 12-10 overall and 2-4 in B1G action, after tangling with the Tigers of Missouri on Tuesday night. The Braggin' Rights Showdown was played in Sauget, Ill. at Grizzlies Ballpark, and Illinois lost to Mizzou, 11-9, as the Illini were also down early, trailing 8-0 after two innings, and clawed back boosted by a 6-run sixth inning, but the late rally wasn't enough in the defeat. The Illini are coming off dropping a three-game B1G series at Northwestern, getting edged in Friday's opener, 5-4, before falling, 11-6, in game two of Friday's DH, then losing, 14-4 (7 innings) in the series finale on Saturday.
