Spartans Begin 2025 Season in Sarasota

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State rowing officially begins its 2025 racing season this weekend as it heads to Sarasota for a two-day Sunshine State Invitational.Â

The Spartans will field four eights and pair of fours, racing a total of 46 athletes. A total of 17 women's teams will compete over the two-day event, with Iowa the only other Big Ten entry. Other crews include Kansas, UMass, Alabama, Kansas State, Old Dominion, Tulsa, Dartmouth, High Point, West Virginia, Boston College, Miami, Jacksonville, Louisville, UCF, and North Carolina. Â

Head coach Stacey Rippetoe is in her second season at the helm of Michigan State's program after returning to East Lansing in the summer of 2023. She is aided by four assistant coaches: Annie Cantu, Nicole Marek, Kayla Romo and McKenzie Vaughn.   Cantu and Marek both rowed for MSU as undergrads.Â

Racing begins on Friday at 2 pm with time trials in the NCAA boats (varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four), with the results feeding into heats.  Heats in the second varsity four (three) begin at 2:50 pm, followed by the third eights, in which MSU will have a pair of entries. The NCAA boats begin their heats at 4:30 pm with three heats of fours, followed by the second eights and then wrapping with the varsity eights, which begin at 5:50 pm.Â

There will also be men's IRA races at the regatta, featuring crews from Washington, Harvard, Brown, Yale, and Northeastern.  Â
