Rowing Opens Season With Promising Results in Sarasota

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State opened the 2025 season in Sarasota, Florida over the weekend, and came away with some promising results for its young, developing crews.Â

The Spartans had three of its six boats in A finals, just missed a podium finish in the varsity eight and won the petite final in the third varsity eight/novice eight.Â

The NCAA boats all began racing on Friday with time trials to set up the semifinal heats. In the varsity eight, the Spartans won their semifinal by a half a length over Miami and open water over Alabama. In the A final on Sunday, the Spartans were a length off the pace of first-place finisher UCF, but just four seats behind third-place North Carolina.Â

In the second varsity eight, MSU was half a length off of North Carolina in the semifinal heat to take second place and advance into the A final. In that race, the Spartans were sixth in a competitive field that saw second through fifth place finish within a 1.22 seconds. The Spartans were clocked in 6:48.24 to take sixth place.Â

The two novice eight boats both raced in the third varsity eight races, with MSU's B entry clocked in 7:28.97 to take third in the semis, ahead of  Kansas State and the Spartans' A boat. In the A final, the second Spartan entry finished fifth in a time of 7:11.03, while the Spartans won the B final in a time of 7:12.79.Â

Both of MSU's fours raced in the B finals on Sunday after fourth-place finishes in the semifinal heats. The V4 was clocked in a time of 7:32.60 to take second behind Alabama on Sunday, while the 2V4 was fourth behind Alabama, Boston College and Louisville in a time of 7:52.46.Â

The Spartans will be back in action next Saturday (April 5) at Eastern Michigan. Â
