Busch’s 3-for-5 outing with four RBI washed out with loss as Spartans overtaken late.
MSU is now 9-2 on the season, including 3-1 during its eight-game, 10-day Greenville residency. WCU moves to 6-7 with the win. Wednesday was the Spartans' second-straight loss in the series with the Catamounts, but MSU still leads the all-time series, 6-3.
Senior infielder Sam Busch was 3-for-5 with four RBI Wednesday night, including a solo HR, and two runs scored. However, it was washed out by WCU overtaking MSU with six runs in the ninth.
"I thought Sam Busch had a big night at the plate for us, and unfortunately, we don't have anything to show for it, for him," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I don't know if I've ever been associated with a game where a team scored six runs and the ball never traveled more than 100 feet. When you walk guys and you hit guys, and you give good teams opportunities to score, they're going to take advantage. We did not do enough to win the ballgame and that is unacceptable."
The Catamounts plated six runs in the ninth without a hit, taking advantage of four walks plus one intentional walk, two hit-by-pitch and one error.
Both teams had eight hits apiece on the night, with WCU leaving 10 men on base, while MSU left eight.
Along with Busch's multi-hit outing, sophomore outfielder Parker Picot joined him going 2-for-5. Picot also made an impressive catch while patrolling right field near the Pesky's Pole, as Fluor Field has the same dimensions as famous Fenway Park.
Junior outfielder Jake Dresselhouse was 1-for-2 with a run scored, adding one stolen base. Senior infielder Nick Williams was 1-for-3 with a double, and two runs scored, adding a walk and swiping one base. Sophomore infielder Ryan McKay was 1-for-5 with two RBI on a two-run single in the second. Senior outfielder JT Sokolove drew a walk, stole second and scored a run. His stolen base was the seventh of the season, and he and N.Williams are now tied for the team lead. Junior infielder Randy Seymour drew three walks on the night, scoring a run after the first one of the game in the second, and earned an RBI for a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
The Spartans plated two runs in the top of the first on a two-run single by Busch. MSU has now scored 23 of its 85 runs this season in the first inning.
Western Carolina countered with four runs in the top of the second for 4-2 lead, but the Spartans responded with two runs in the home half of the frame on McKay's two-run single to tie it up at 4-all.
A solo Busch blast to lead off the third put the Spartans ahead, 5-4. That remained the score until the seventh, when MSU plated a pair of runs, the first on an RBI single by Busch, driving in N.Williams who doubled. Senior catcher Noah Bright reached on an error, and Dresselhouse followed with a walk to fill the bases full of Spartans. Seymour drew a four-pitch walk to plate Busch and give Michigan State a 7-4 advantage, before WCU countered with its six-run top of the ninth, and MSU went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
The Spartans conclude their Greenville residency by hosting the First Pitch Invitational on Friday-Sunday, March 7-9, tangling with Cornell and UAB on Friday, March 7 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, then Winthrop on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. and UAB again on March 9 at 12 p.m.
