MSU Downed By IU In Series Opener Sunday

Spartans and Hoosiers finally get series going after postponed first two days, MSU’s comeback falls short in 6-4 loss.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Michigan State waited to play baseball in Bloomington, Indiana for two days before finally taking the field on Sunday, falling to Indiana, 6-4, at Bart Kaufman Field.
After inclement weather with thunderstorms and rain in the Bloomington area all day Friday and Saturday postponed the weekend series to Sunday and Monday, MSU and IU took the field for a single game Sunday afternoon with an upcoming doubleheader scheduled for Monday.
At first pitch on Sunday, temps were in the mid-40s, but the wind picked up throughout the game to push the temperature down into the mid-30s with damp, misty conditions.
MSU had nine hits on the day, with six singles and three doubles, while Indiana had 12 hits, with 11 singles and one double, that didn't come until the eighth.
Both teams made one error, and the Spartans left seven runners on base, while the Hoosiers left eight on.
"Today was extremely frustrating with how it went, but I'm proud of our guys for continuing to compete through the entire game and battled in the ninth," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We just didn't play well enough to win today. We made far too many mental mistakes to win, I counted 10, and it's difficult to beat anybody when you have that many mental mistakes, much less a good team like Indiana. We need to clean that up and will need to do that quick as we have a big day tomorrow with the doubleheader. I know our guys will be ready to go out and compete tomorrow and give it everything they've got."
Graduate catcher Caleb Berry and junior infielder Randy Seymour were both 2-for-4, with Berry knocking an RBI, and Seymour scoring a run, along with a double, one of three two-baggers on the day for MSU. Senior outfielder JT Sokolove was 2-for-5 with a run scored, while fellow senior outfielder Nick Williams was 1-for-3 with a double, and scored a run. Senior infielder Sam Busch was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and senior Noah Bright knocked a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth.
On the mound, junior starter Joseph Dzierwa went 5.0 IP, scattering eight hits and five runs, four earned, with three walks and five strikeouts in being dealt his first loss of the season, now 5-1 on the year. Redshirt-sophomore Tate Farquhar went 2.2 IP, spraying four hits and one run, while walking one, and sophomore Garrett Brewer came on in with a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth and got out of it with a flyout against the one batter he faced.
MSU got on the board in its first at bat, as they've done most of the season, scoring a run in the first inning for the 12th time in the 28 games this season. McKay sparked the rally after getting hit by pitch and moving to second on a wild pitch. Berry then knocked an RBI single through the right side and McKay scampered around to score and give the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage.
The scoreboard didn't stay 1-0 for long as the Hoosiers also got on the board in their first at bat, and also with a single to right, leveling the game at 1-all.
Sokolove made a spectacular catch in the bottom of the first, with a diving grab at the warning track, sliding into the fence but holding on for the out.
In the top of the third, Sokolove got the Spartan offense going with a single up the middle. He later moved to second on a groundout and Busch followed with the early theme of the game with an RBI single to right, plating Sokolove and putting MSU on top, 2-1.
IU countered with an RBI single in the third to knot the score back up at 2-2. The Hoosiers took their first lead of the day with two runs in the fourth, adding a run in each of the fifth and sixth stanzas to take a 6-2 lead.
The Spartans got a run back in the seventh, as N.Williams led off with a double down the left-field line for the game's first extra-base hit by either team. Seymour singled up the middle to push N.Williams to third. Seymour then stole second, and an Indiana throwing error on the play allowed N.Williams to scamper home to pull MSU to 6-3.
MSU did not go quietly into the chilly, damp Bloomington afternoon, as Seymour sparked the rally with a 1-out double to left. Bright then came to bat and knocked a pinch-hit double down the line in right and Seymour scampered around to score to pull the Green & White within 6-4. However, that would be the closest the visitors would get, as the Spartans' rally and the game came to an end.
The Spartans and Hoosiers will wrap up the delayed and altered three-game series in two days, by playing a doubleheader on Monday, April 7 starting at 12:02 p.m. ET, with game two at approximately 4:02 p.m.
