Second Spartan in last three seasons to be tabbed to list for prestigious award.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball player Joseph Dzierwa has been named a semifinalist for the 2025 Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, as announced Thursday afternoon by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), in conjunction with the Dick Howser Trophy Committee.
This prestigious award in college baseball has been given to the top player based on two rounds of national voting by NCBWA members since 1987.
This is the 38th year of the Dick Howser Trophy and the 2025 finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 7.
Dzierwa is the second Spartan in the last three seasons to be tabbed to the prestigious award semifinalist list, joining first baseman Brock Vradenburg in 2023.
The Spartan southpaw Dzierwa is one of 64 players on the semifinalist list. He is also one of seven from the Big Ten Conference, but the only pitcher from the league, as he's joined by UCLA infielder Roch Cholowsky, USC infielder Ethan Hedges, Oregon outfielder Mason Neville, Indiana outfielder Devin Taylor, Michigan infielder Mitch Voit and Oregon infielder Jacob Walsh.
A native of Haskins, Ohio, Dzierwa enters Thursday night's game against Minnesota with 94 strikeouts, which ranks second in the B1G and 33rd in the NCAA. Dzierwa is five Ks behind league leader, Iowa's Cade Obermueller, who has 99 Ks.
With an 2.01 ERA, Dzierwa leads the B1G and is sixth in the NCAA. The Spartan southpaw Dzierwa also leads the B1G and is 14th in the NCAA in WHIP (0.93), as well as fourth in the B1G and 88th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (10.49). Dzierwa is also second in the league and 33rd in the nation in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (6.25).
Dzierwa continues to establish new program top marks, as he is the first Spartan player in program history to be a four-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, doing so in back-to-back weeks twice. No MSU player had picked up back-to-back B1G weekly honors of any kind before Dzierwa did it the first two weeks of the season, earning the award Feb. 17 and 24, and he's now done it again on May 5 and 12.
By earning B1G Pitcher of the Week four times this season, Dzierwa is the first B1G pitcher to earn the award four times in a season since 2009 when Ohio State's Alex Wimmers was a four-time winner.
Dzierwa and the Spartans up regular-season action against Minnesota in a three-game B1G series, Thursday-Saturday, May 15-17, in which will be MSU Senior Weekend Celebrations, presented by HAP, at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium.
Thursday and Saturday's games are both 6:02 p.m. start times, with Saturday's regular-season finale slated for 1:02 p.m.
Saturday is "517 Day" when the Spartans take on Minnesota.
