Â
MSU put its varsity eight, third eight, and fourth eight into championship contention on Sunday, and had a photo finish in the second varsity eight, which missed out on the grand final by two-tenths of a second. Due to weather the weather forecast, racing began on Saturday morning with varsity eights and progressed through the fourth varsity/second novice eights.Â
Â
The Spartans opened the day with a convincing advancement into Sunday's varsity eight grand final, finishing second to Rutgers and Michigan, open water over both Minnesota and USC.  MSU was battling the Women of Troy for the third spot through 500 meters, and sat in fourth at the midpoint of the race, but used the third 500 to re-establish its standing in the third 500 and finished in  6:35.551, more than seven seconds ahead of Minnesota with USC falling to fifth  more than eight seconds back. The Green and White lines up with Rutgers, Michigan, Washington, Indiana, and Ohio State in Sunday's grand final, making the final ahead of two ranked crews (USC and UCLA).Â
Â
Both of MSU's novice boats (third varsity eight and fourth varsity eights) will also have a chance to medal on Sunday. Comprised of all true novices/first year rowers, the two eights will race on Sunday morning at 9:14 and 9:38 am and will look to set a tone as the raceday begins. In the 3V8, MSU was behind No. 2 Washington and No. 10 Michigan at the finish, timed in 7:19.789. Just 2.6 seconds separated the top three crews at the 500 meter mark, and the Spartans were in contact with Michigan past the 1000 meter mark as the Huskies pulled ahead. The Spartans were clocked in 7:19.789, holding off a charging USC which continually tried to move on MSU in the final 750; the Women of Troy finished in 7:23.854, followed by Wisconsin and Indiana. Washington, Michigan, and MSU will line up with Rutgers, Ohio State and Minnesota on Sunday.
Â
The 4V8 comfortably made the grand final in a time of 7:38.575, open water over both Wisconsin and Iowa. Ohio State and Michigan were ahead of the Spartans in the second heat, and will advance along with Washington, Rutgers and UCLA into the Grand Final. Rutgers and UCLA ha a photo finish for second and third place, with the Scarlet Knights edging the Bruins by just over three-tenths of a second.Â
Â
The second varsity eight lost out on a spot in the grand final in a heartbreaker – Washington won the race in a time of 6:35.483, with three boats (Minnesota, Indiana, and MSU) fighting over the final 500 meters for the final two spots in the Grand Final. MSU had a furious final stretch, as it trailed Minnesota and Indiana by nearly seven and five seconds, respectively at 1500 meters; the Spartans closed it to within a second to make it a photo finish – upon the photo review, Indiana took the third spot by two-tenths of a second (6:49.785-6:49.988).  MSU will race UCLA, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Iowa in the petite final on Sunday.
Â
Battling a crosswind, both of MSU's fours earned fifth-place finishes in their respective heats and will race in petite finals on Sunday morning The varsity four was clocked in a time of 7:50.462, ahead of Wisconsin at the finish; MSU, USC and the Badgers will race against UCLA and Iowa in the final.   The second varsity four earned a time of 7:57.117 to move onto Sunday's action against UCLA, Iowa, Indiana, and Wisconsin in the petite final.Â
Â
Sunday racing begins at 9 am, capping the day with the varsity eight grand final at 11:38.Â
