NCAA Regional Play Begins for Michigan State Women’s Golf on Monday in Oklahoma

East Lansing, Mich. – – Michigan State's women's golf team arrived in Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon, played a practice round on Sunday and will begin play in the NCAA Normal Regional on Monday, May 5 at the OU Jimmie Austin Golf Club.

The regional was originally scheduled to be played over three days, but inclement weather will force the field to play 36 holes on Monday. The teams will start off at 8:30 a.m. ET and playing continuously. The final 18 holes will be played on either Tuesday or Wednesday
The Spartans tee off on Monday at 8:30 a.m., playing with Duke and host Oklahoma.

THE NCAA NORMAN REGIONAL FIELD
The 12 teams competing in the Norman Regional include (in order of seed): 1. Stanford, 2. Northwestern, 3. North Carolina, 4. Michigan State, 5. Duke, 6. Oklahoma, 7. Baylor, 8. Oregon State, 9. Tulsa, 10. Denver, 11. Furman and 12. Southern Mississippi. The field also includes six individual competitors.

MSU is coming off a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships.
The Spartans, who won the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational on Feb. 17 (4-under par 860) have posted eight top-5 team finishes this season have finished runner-up or tied for second on four occasions.
Senior Brooke Bierman was named All-Big Ten First Team last week and junior Taylor Kehoe earned second team all-league honors.

FAMILIAR TERRITORY

Michigan State is making its ninth-straight NCAA Regionals appearance and 25th since 1999.
The Spartans are looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in the last five years.
MSU won the NCAA Palm Beach Regional in 2023, the program's first-ever NCAA Regional win, with Brooke Biermann taking medalist honors, before finishing in 18th place at the NCAA Championships.
The Spartans hosted the NCAA Regional in East Lansing last year, placed third and then finished in 17th place at the NCAA Championships … Katie Lu was one of the top individuals not on advancing teams and played for the individual title, finishing tied for 45th overall.

REGIONALS EXPERIENCE

While head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll is making her 25th appearance in NCAA Regionals, Michigan State's lineup features five players with extensive Regional action.
Seniors Brooke Biermann and Katie Lu are playing in their fourth-straight NCAA Regional and helped guide the Spartans to the 2023 NCAA Palm Beach Regional title, the program's first regional win as Biermann claimed medalist honors, firing a 3-under par 213.
Biermann and Lu have been part of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships (2023 and 2024).
Lu, meanwhile, tied for 33rd place at last year's Palm Beach Regional … MSU finished in 18th place at the NCAA Championships and Lu advanced to the final round of stroke play, becoming the first plyer in MSU history to advance as an individual.
Junior Taylor Kehoe played in the 2023 NCAA Palm Beach Regional during her freshman year at Alabama, tying for 51st place at 16-over par 232.
The Spartans' three lowest 54-hole team scores at an NCAA Regional have come since 2017.
MSU set a school record in 2024 with a 4-under par 860, finishing in third place among 12 teams at the East Lansing Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships.
The mark of 860 topped the team's 872 in the 2023 NCAA Palm Beach Regional and was originally set by the 2017 squad in Athens.
MSU shot a 5-over par 878 in 2021 in Louisville for the fourth-lowest mark, while the 882 in 2019 in Austin is the fifth-lowest.

Biermann has enjoyed the best season of her career, with one individual title, four top-5 finishes and six among the top-20 overall.
Her 71.62 scoring average is current the fourth-best single-season average in program history and she has three of the top-20 single-season marks at MSU.
During her career, Biermann has seven top-5 finishes, 11 among the top-10 and 25 among top-20. Her career average of 72.94 ranks third all-time in program history.
When Biermann won the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational in February, she joined Lu as one of 13 players in program history with at least two career wins.
Lu posted a 71.54 scoring average last year, the second-best single-season in program history, and was an honorable mention All-American.
Her career scoring average of 73.37 ranks fourth all-time at Michigan State.

Senior Brooke Biermann was one of 10 golfers selected to the All-Big Ten First Team, while junior Taylor Kehoe earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors and senior Katie Lu was a recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Biermann, who earns all-conference honors for the first time in her career, has been Michigan State's top in seven of 10 events this year and leads the with a 71.62 scoring average. She has finished among the top-5 four times, among the top-10 five times and among the top-20 nine times while having 93.1 percent of her rounds count toward the team total (27-of-29). Her 71.62 scoring average is current the fourth-best single-season average in program history and she has three of the top-20 single-season marks at MSU.
During her career, Biermann has seven top-5 finishes, 11 among the top-10 and 25 among top-20. Her career average of 72.94 ranks third all-time in program history.
Kehoe, a transfer from Alabama, is second on the team with a 72.29 scoring average over eight events and 24 rounds. She has posted one top-5 finish, three among the top-10 and four in the top-20 while having 23-of-24 rounds count toward the team total (95.8%). In four events in the spring, Kehoe has carried a 71.75 scoring average, with a season-best tie for fifth place at the Buckeye Invitational on April 12-13.
In two years at Alabama, Kehoe earned Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors once and was an SEC Academic Honor Roll selection while carrying a 74.28 average in 58 rounds. Kehoe's current 72.29 average is a person best and is tied for the sixth-best single season mark in MSU history.
Lu, an All-Big Ten First Team selection in 2024, is third on the team with a 72.82 scoring average, the 13th-best mark for a single season at MSU. She has one top-5 finish, two top-10 and six among the top-20 in 10 events this year. Lu leads the team in rounds counted with 96.4 percent of her scores counting toward the team total (27-of-28).
Along with Biermann, Lu ranks among the top players in program history. She posted a 71.54 scoring average last year, the second-best single-season in program history, and was an honorable mention All-American. Her career scoring average of 73.37 ranks fourth all-time at Michigan State.

MODEL OF CONSISTENCY

The Michigan State women's golf program has appeared in 25 of the past 26 NCAA Regionals (1999-2014; 2016-25) and has earned a berth in the NCAA Championships 14 times since 2000 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024).
In addition, since the inception of the conference championships in 1974, only Ohio State (18) has won more league titles than the Spartans (14).
MSU won five consecutive Big Ten titles from 1974-78, and has won conference crowns in 1982, 2001, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2021.

HEAD COACH STACY SLOBODNIK-STOLL

In Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll's 28 years guiding the program, she has led MSU to eight Big Ten titles (2001, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2021), 14 trips to the NCAA Championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024), and 25 appearances in the NCAA Regionals (1999-2014, 2016-25).
MSU has won 45 tournaments during Slobodnik-Stoll's tenure, and her players have earned All-Big Ten honors 61 times, including 38 first-team selections.
She has been voted Big Ten Coach of the Year on five occasions (2001, 2007, 2012, 2017, 2018).
Slobodnik-Stoll was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in June 2017 and the Women's Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December 2017.

Her 72.29 scoring average currently ranks as the seventh-best single season average in program history.

Senior Katie Lu is third on the team in scoring average at 72.82, with one top-five finish, two top-10 and six among the top-20 in 10 events. Lu's best finish this year was a tie for fifth place at 1-under par 145 in the rain-shortened Valspar Augusta Invitational on March 15-16.

Biermann and Lu enter the postseason with career scoring averages at Michigan State that rank among the top-five in program history. Biermann is third all-time with a 72.94 scoring average, while Lu ranks fourth all-time at 73.37.

The MSU lineup this weekend also includes junior Paula Balanzategui and sophomore Ana Sofia Murcia. A junior, Balanzategui is fourth on the team with a 74.15 scoring average, including a 72.88 average in the spring that is the second-best on the squad. Murcia is fifth on the team with a 74.48 scoring average, including a 74.53 mark in six spring events. Her best finish this year was a tie for 18th place at the Valspar Augusta Invitational at 6-over par 150. Freshman Catalina Monroy is sixth on the team with a 75.25 average and has two top-20 finishes.

Home to Oklahoma men's and women's golf, Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club is located in Norman, Oklahoma on the University of Oklahoma campus. It features rolling hills, native grasses and majestic Bur Oaks with 77.9-course rating (Championship/Team tees). In 2023, Golfweek named "The Jimmie" the No. 6 Campus Golf Course in the country, and No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference.
