Becomes second former Spartan to join professional ranks, joining battery mate Joseph Dzierwa who was drafted earlier in week.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball's Caleb Berry signed a non-drafted free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox.
The graduate senior catcher is the second former Spartan to join the professional ranks this week after teammate Joseph Dzierwa was selected in the Major League Baseball Draft earlier in the week. Dzierwa was selected in the second round by the Baltimore Orioles.
Berry, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., was second on the Spartans in average, hitting .297, with 49 hits, in his lone season at MSU after transferring from NAIA school Milligan (Tenn.). He was also fourth on the team in slugging percentage at .467, ranking third on the team in HR (6), fourth in RBI (34) and tied for fifth in doubles (10).
The Spartan catcher logged a 10-game hitting streak from March 7-23, the longest of the season by an MSU player, and Berry also added a six-game hitting streak late in the season from May 7-17. He was second on the team with 17 multi-hit games, highlighted by a season-high three in going 3-for-5 with a HR vs. Ohio State on April 18. Berry was also tied for second on the team by notching eight multi-RBI games, including a season-high four ribbies also against OSU, two days later.
Behind the plate, he threw out eight runners trying to steal a base. He played in 45 games, making 44 starts, including 30 at catcher.
