Spartan Women’s Tennis Dealt Defeat In Dual At Columbia

The Green & White drop its second match of the season Saturday in a matinee match at Columbia.
NEW YORK CITY -- Michigan State women's tennis dropped its second match of the season, falling at Columbia in a 4-0 defeat on Saturday at Columbia's Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
Spartan women's tennis slides to 5-2 after a difficult weekend in the Big Apple, while the Lions improved to 5-2 with the win.
Doubles matches kicked off Saturday afternoon to begin the action. While all Spartan pairings put up a valiant effort, the Lions ultimately overtook the Green & White.
First to fall was No. 3 doubles, where sophomore Nina Plihal and senior Issey Purser were defeated in a 6-3 battle with Columbia's Emily Baek/Sophia Wang.
The Lions solidified the doubles point at No. 2 doubles, MSU's sophomore Amara Brahmbhatt and redshirt-junior Oriana Parkins-Godwin also dropped their match 6-3 to Michelle Li/Amber Lin.
With the doubles point clinched in the Lions' favor, the Spartans' No. 88 ranked sophomore Ellie Blackford and senior Matilde Morais's match went unfinished, standing at 4-3.
Singles matches solidified the win for Columbia, with them securing matches at No. 6 No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
First to be defeated was Purser at No. 6, who dropped her match 6-1, 6-2 to Amber Yin.
Following in suit was No. 116 ranked Brahmbhatt at No. 1 singles, falling in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Gayathri Krishnan.
Solidifying the win for the Lions was Emily Baeck at No. 3 singles, overtaking MSU's Morais in a 6-3, 6-4 win.
With the match clinched in the Lions' favor, the remaining singles matches went unfinished.
The Spartans return home to the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. to face the Toledo Rockets.
