MSU led early before Clemson stormed ahead.
For the second time in as many games, MSU had an early lead, only to be overtaken in the middle and later innings. On Tuesday, the Spartans took an early lead against Winthrop, only to be overtaken in the later innings by the Eagles, in a 5-2 decision.Â
Wednesday night against Clemson, Michigan State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, only to have Clemson counter with a run in the home half of the second stanza. The Tigers then erupted for seven runs in the fourth, one in each of the fifth and sixth stanzas, before two in the seventh for the 12-1 run-rule win in seven innings.
The Spartans slide to 3-8 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 11-1, winning their third-straight game after suffering their first loss of the season, 7-0, on Friday to in-state rival South Carolina.
Wednesday was the first meeting between MSU and Clemson since 2022, and the Tigers now take a narrow, 11-10-1 lead in the all-time series.
Senior outfielder Nick Williams was 2-for-2, while redshirt-sophomore catcher Adam Broski and sophomore infielder Dayton Murphy were both 1-for-2, with Broski scoring a run, and junior outfielder Trent Rice was 1-for-3. Broski and Murphy each knocked a double, while sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas tallied an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
On the mound, freshman Brady Chambers made the first start of his collegiate career, going 2.0 IP, with one hit, one run and one strikeout. Junior relievers Gannon Grundman (one K), Josh Klug (one K) and Ben Kochany (one K) and freshmen relievers Bobby Crane (one K) and Andrew Everson (two Ks) finished the game out, with Everson making his Spartan debut.Â
The Spartans got on the scoreboard first, as Broski smacked a one-out double the left-center field gap. Williams followed with a single through the right side to move Broski to third, and Thomas knocked a deep fly to left for a sac fly to plate Broski, briefly putting the Green & White ahead, 1-0.
Clemson quickly countered with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second to tie it up, and then pulled away from MSU in the middle innings for the win.
Michigan State then opens Big Ten Conference action by heading to Lincoln, Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers Friday-Sunday, March 6-8. On Thursday, Marcy 5, MSU will travel by bus from Greenville to the Charlotte, N.C. airport, and then fly from Charlotte to Omaha, Nebraska, and then bus from Omaha to Lincoln, for the B1G opener at Nebraska.
