MSU scores run in top of fourth, but Nebraska plates run in fourth, fifth and seventh stanzas.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Michigan State baseball was downed by Nebraska, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park in game two of the three-game Big Ten Conference opening series.
MSU got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth, but Nebraska countered with a run the home half of the fourth frame, then added a run in each of the fifth and seventh stanzas. Â The Huskers clinched the series after Friday night's 5-4, 10-inning game that started two hours late due to inclement weather in the Lincoln area.
Saturday's game was played under sunny skies, and the Spartans knocked six hits in the loss, sliding to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in B1G play. The Huskers scored their three runs on eight hits, in moving to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Graduate catcher Noah Bright was 1-for-4 with a run scored, while junior infielder Ryan McKay and senior outfielder Nick Williams were also both 1-for-4. Freshman designated hitter Cole Van Ameyde was 1-for-3, junior infielder Jasen Oliver and sophomore infielder Dayton Murphy were both 1-for-2. Van Ameyde had MSU's lone extra-base hit of the day on a double in the fourth, posting a pair of extra-base hits out of his last three at bats with a triple on Friday night in the ninth inning. Sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk for MSU's lone RBI on Saturday afternoon.
On the mound, graduate starter Carter Monke went 4.2 IP, spraying six hits with two runs, one earned, with four Ks and two walks, being dealt the loss to slide to 1-2 on the season. Redshirt-freshman reliever Brady Chambers went 2.1 IP with two hits, one run, three Ks and two walks, with all three strikeouts coming in the sixth inning after the Huskers loaded the bases with no outs, before three punchouts left them stranded. Senior reliever Tommy Szczepanski pitched a hitless and scoreless 1.0 IP, with two strikeouts for the first two outs, then a flyout to end the eighth in 3-up, 3-down fashion.
Bright started the Spartan scoring rally in the fourth with a one-out single, and Van Ameyde followed by lacing a double down the left field line. Freshman infielder CJ Deckinga drew a walk to load the bases, and two batters later, Thomas registered his RBI with the bases-loaded walk to get the Spartans on the board with a 1-0 advantage.
The Huskers countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth frame, stringing together a pair of hits to tie it up at a run apiece.
Nebraska added a run in the fifth on a double and an MSU error, and another run in the seventh on a solo home run for the 3-1 score.
