No. 64 MSU Women’s Tennis Downed in Senior Sunday Match

The Spartans fall, 4-1, to Maryland in their Spartan senior celebrations.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 64 Michigan State women's tennis was downed by No. 44 Maryland, 4-1, in their Spartan Senior Celebrations on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
MSU slides to 11-11 in overall play and 4-8 in Big Ten Conference action.
UMD advances to 15-5 and 7-4 in B1G play.
Doubles play began with the Spartans struggling to find their footing. The No. 58-ranked MSU tandem of sophomore Ellie Blackford and senior Matilde Morais quickly fell behind 2-4, and Maryland used that momentum to triumph over them at No. 1 doubles, 6-2.
While the duo of redshirt junior Oriana Parkins-Godwin and senior Issey Purser were quick to secure a lead over the Terrapins, 4-3, the Terps were able to comeback and clinch the doubles point from behind at, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.
With the doubles point clinched in UMD's favor, sophomore Amara Brahmbhatt/redshirt-junior Hanna Tsitavets's match at No. 2 doubles remained unfinished, standing at 4-5.
Singles matches began with the Green & White looking to come back for a victory, but Maryland was quick to make their mark on the courts.
Sophomore Nina Plihal dropped her match at No. 5 singles, overtaken by Terrapin Lucia Donnelly, 6-3, 6-3.
Solidifying the three-point-lead for the Terps was Magdalena Baniak who faced Morais at No. 3 singles, claiming victory 6-2, 6-3.
The Spartans fought back, with Blackford adding the sole point to the team's total, triumphing at No. 2 singles over Emma Ghirardato, 6-2, 6-4.
Clinching the match was Diya Challa at No. 4 singles, where she downed Tsitavets in a difficult 6-4, 6-1 match.
Brahmbhatt's match at No. 1 singles remained unfinished, standing at 4-6, 6-2, 0-1 versus No. 91-ranked Oliwia Orlinska.
Parkins-Godwin's match at No. 5 singles also went unfinished, also splitting sets against Terrapin Tamari Gagoshidze 6-2, 4-6.
