Spartans denied series sweep.
SEATTLE -- Michigan State baseball was topped by Washington, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon in the Big Ten Conference series finale at UW's Husky Ballpark, denying the Spartans the series sweep.
Despite not getting the sweep, MSU did win the series and is the first visiting B1G team to win a series at Washington, as the Huskies had won all of their previous home series in their two years in the conference.
The Spartans won Friday's opener, 6-4, and Saturday's contest, 13-8, to capture the series, their first B1G road series win and only their second conference series win on the season.Â
With Sunday's result, MSU has won three of its last five games and is now 14-23 overall and 8-13 in B1G action. Washington is now 17-22 overall and 8-10 in B1G play. Friday marked Michigan State's first-ever game played in the state of Washington and this weekend was the first-ever meetings between the Spartans and Huskies as Big Ten foes, and also the first meetings between the two teams on campus. The Huskies now lead the all-time series with the Spartans, 4-3.
After a scoreless first two innings, Sunday's game became a back-and-forth battle in a big way, with the Huskies plating five runs in the home half of the third for a 5-0 lead. The five-run margin didn't last long, as the Spartans plated four runs in the top of the fourth to close within 5-4. UW and MSU traded runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, respectively, for a 6-5 score. Washington added a run in the sixth and another in the eighth to make the score 8-5. MSU threatened in the top of the ninth by loading the bases and had initially scored a run on a fielder's choice. However, after UW challenged and the umpires reviewed the play, MSU was called for runner's interference and the run taken off the board, with the baserunner returning to third and two outs, and a flyout ended the game.
Both teams had 10 hits, with seven of the nine Spartans in the lineup with at least one hit. Sophomore infielder Dayton Murphy was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, junior infielder Ryan McKay was 2-for- with a double, and a run scored. Senior outfielder Nick Williams was also 2-for-4. Junior outfielder Parker Picot was 1-for- with two RBI on a double, while senior infielder Randy Seymour and freshman infielder CJ Deckinga were both 1-for-, with Deckinga logging an RBI and a run scored, while Seymour scored one run. Senior catcher Noah Bright was 1-for-5. Sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas reached on two walks and scored a run, and fellow sophomore outfielder Isaac Sturgess had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
On the mound, senior starter Carter Monke went 3.0 IP, scattering five runs on four hits, with one walk and two Ks, being dealt the loss. Freshman Brady Chambers (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K), senior Tommy Szczepanski (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K), junior Logan Pikur (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K), graduate Andrew Siler (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K), freshman Andrew Everson (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K) and senior Nolan Higgins (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K), closed it out.
Washington scored its five runs one three hits in the third, including a two-run home run as the big blow, for a 5-0 lead.Â
Michigan State quickly countered in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally. Seymour sparked it with a single, then Thomas followed with a walk. Murphy then smacked a single up the middle, to drive in Seymour and move Thomas to third. Deckinga then followed with a single to drive in Thomas. Picot was up next and he belted a double to right field to plate Murphy and Deckinga, but was out at third trying to stretch it to a triple, leaving the score, 5-4.
The Huskies tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth, for a 6-4 lead.Â
McKay led off the top of the fifth with a double to the left-center gap, and Williams singled through the left side to move McKay to third. Two batters later, Sturgess flew out to center for the sac fly to plate McKay and close the Spartans within 6-5.Â
Washington stretched its lead back to two run with an RBI single in the sixth, and another RBI single in the eighth for the 8-5 score, setting up the ninth inning.
Michigan State returns home to host Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 22, in MSU's lone game nationally televised on Big Ten Network. First pitch from Jeff Isbhia Field at McLane Stadium is slated for 6:02 p.m.
