Spartans fall to Buckeyes in B1G finale in last road trip of regular-season to conclude penultimate weekend of regular-season play.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Michigan State baseball was topped by Ohio State, 3-2, in 10 innings, Sunday afternoon at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium in MSU's Big Ten Conference finale of not only the weekend but the regular-season as well.
Sunday's result in the penultimate weekend of the regular-season and MSU's final weekend of the B1G schedule slides MSU's record to 19-30 overall and the Spartans finish Big Ten play with an 11-19 league mark. Michigan State is currently sitting tied for 12th in the conference standings, and remain in contention to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament, based on next weekend's results.
The Spartans drew their bye in the conference schedule on the final weekend, and will host Illinois State, Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16 in Spartan Senior Celebrations weekend.
MSU scored a run in the first frame on Sunday and another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead, but didn't score again.
Unfortunately, Ohio State rallied with a run in the seventh and another in the eight to tie it up and won it in the 10th. The Buckeyes, who were among other teams receiving votes in this week's NCBWA Top 25 Poll, moved to 26-22 overall and 15-13 in B1G action, having won five of their last six games.
OSU won Friday night's game played at Huntington Park, home of the Columbus Clippers, the Triple-A Affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians, by a 15-5 (8-innnings, run-rule), before shifting back to campus and playing at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, with MSU winning Saturday afternoon's game, 7-4, setting up Sunday's rubber match.
Sunday's series loss snapped MSU's streak of winning the previous seven series, marking the Spartans' first series lost to the Buckeyes since 2015. Michigan State has still won four of the last six games in the all-time series, winning nine of the last 14 match-ups as part of 16 of the last 25 vs. Ohio State.
After Friday's run total by the Buckeyes extended the series streak where the winning team had scored 10 or more runs in the previous nine wins, including the Spartans doing so in each of their three wins in sweeping the 2025 series, Saturday and Sunday's win total barely added up to 10 runs with seven by MSU in Saturday's win and the three by OSU on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Spartans scored their two runs on 10 hits, but left 10 runners on base.
"It was a tough game today. We had some chances, and unfortunately, we couldn't cash in on them, so it's disappointing. I thought our guys played hard and they played the game the right way, and I'm proud of them for that," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "This one stings. They all sting when you lose, and to lose a close one in extra innings, that's tough. So, yeah, guys are guys are upset, and they should be. When you work hard and you put in the amount of hours and it doesn't go your way, it hurts, and it should hurt."
Junior outfielder Parker Picot had two hits, including a solo home run in the fourth frame. Picot now has five home runs in the last six games.
"He's had an up-and-down year. He had a pretty good little start our first weekend, and then the wheels kind of came off for him. But to his credit, he kept working hard, and when he was out of the lineup there for a little bit, he never complained. He just he kept being a good teammate, he kept working hard, and when he got some opportunities, he took advantage of it and got his way back into the line-up. And he's been one of the better guys recently, and I think that's a credit to the kind of person that he is, and the first-class way that he goes about his business. He's a great teammate and he's a hard worker. So, it's fun to watch those guys that do it the right way reap the rewards."
Picot now has total of 10 round-trippers for the season, and 18 for his Spartan career.
Senior outfielder Nick Williams matched Picot going 2-for-5, knocking a double and scoring a run in the first inning on an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas, for Thomas' lone hit of the day. Sophomore infielder Dayton Murphy was 2-for-4, while senior infielder Randy Seymour was 1-for-5 with a double, graduate senior catcher Noah Bright was 1-for-5 and junior infielder Ryan McKay was 1-for-4.Â
Graduate senior pitcher Carter Monke fired a season-high six strikeouts in going 6.1 IP, scattering six hits and one run, without a walk. Monke yielded two hits in the first inning, before retiring 12-straight Buckeye batters until allowing a leadoff single in the sixth.Â
Monke also got solid defensive plays behind him from the leather-flashing Spartan defense.
The MSU defense was on point from the beginning of the game, keeping the game 1-0 in the first inning on a nifty defensive relay from Picot in right to the cut-off man McKay for the throw home to Bright for the tag and the out.
Junior reliever Parker Picot went 1.0 IP with one hit and one run, one punchout and no walks, before turning the ball over to senior reliever Nolan Higgins, who went the final 2.1 IP, spraying three hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts.
Williams got the Spartan offense going right off the bat in the first at bat of the game, swinging at the first pitch of the game from OSU starter Pierce Herrenbruck, and reaching on a Buckeye fielding error. Two batters later, Bright grounded out to move Williams to second, and Thomas stepped in. He belted a hot shot off the OSU shortstop and into left field for the RBI double and Williams scampered home to put the Spartans ahead with the early 1-0 advantage.
The Buckeyes quickly threatened to tie it, but the Picot to McKay to Bright relay ended the first inning and kept a zero on the scoreboard for OSU.
Picot added to the Spartan lead in the fourth with a one-out home run for a 2-0 MSU lead, and the Spartan rally continued that inning, loading the bases, but were unable to add to their run total.
OSU broke the stranglehold that Monke had on them by getting a one-out single in the seventh, then got on the board with a run on an RBI double, chasing Monke. Pikur came on and snuffed out any additional Buckeye rally with a groundout and a strikeout.
In the bottom of the eighth, an RBI double drew the Buckeyes even, before Higgins chalked up a strikeout to end the frame. After MSU went down in order in the ninth, OSU had a leadoff double, before Higgins slammed the door on a rally and thwarted the threat with a pair of flyouts and a lineout, sending the game to extras.
Williams led off the 10th with a single, sophomore outfielder Isaac Sturgess was hit by pitch and Bright attempted a sac bunt, but it was perfectly laid down the third base line for a single to fill the bases full of Spartans. After the Buckeyes made a pitching change, the MSU offense cooled off and were unable to score. Ohio State scored on a walk-off single to win the game.
The Spartans drew their bye in the conference schedule on the final weekend, and will host Illinois State, Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16 in Spartan Senior Celebrations weekend.
MSU first hosts Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, May 12 at 6:02 p.m., before welcoming the Redbirds of ISU in a three-game series. Thursday and Friday's games are also both 6:02 p.m. start times, with Saturday's regular-season finale slated for a 1:02 p.m. first pitch, with pre-game Senior Celebrations recognitions all weekend.
