EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State student-athletes continue to set records for academic achievement in the classroom. Following the Spring 2026 semester, Spartans have posted the highest all-time department cumulative GPA of 3.5135.
This marks the first time in department history that the cumulative GPA has topped a 3.5. It's the 31st consecutive semester over a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
In addition, the spring semester GPA of 3.4603 is the second-best semester in department history, just shy of the record 3.4616 in Fall 2024. MSU Athletics has now posted 27 straight semesters over a 3.0 semester GPA.
Nearly 100 student-athletes graduated during Michigan State commencement ceremonies this spring.
"I'm incredibly proud of our student-athletes and their continued pursuit of excellence in the classroom," said J Batt, Michigan State Vice President and Director of Athletics. "Academic success is a team effort. While the Student-Athlete Support Services team provides first-class academic support, these historic numbers aren't possible without our shared commitment throughout the department."
"In our ever-changing environment of college athletics, our students remain focused and committed to their educational pursuits, and it continues to be reflected in their performance," said Todd Edwards, Executive Director, Student-Athlete Support Services.
Four programs (field hockey, women's track & field, women's tennis and volleyball) posted their highest cumulative GPA in program history, while nine more programs (women's basketball, women's cross country, gymnastics, hockey, rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and men's track & field) recorded their highest post-spring cumulative GPA.
Six teams delivered their best-ever spring semester GPA (women's basketball, women's cross country, gymnastics, women's soccer, women's tennis and wrestling) and four posted their highest semester of either term in program history (field hockey, football, women's track & field and volleyball).
Individually, 464 student-athletes finished Spring 2026 with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher. For the semester, 89 Spartans earned a perfect 4.0 GPA, among the 443 student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA for the term.
