Spartan starting pitcher earns first career B1G honor; Seymour named MSU’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Along with Donovan's All-B1G honor, senior infielder Randy Seymour was named MSU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Donovan, a sophomore pitcher from Commerce, Michigan, is tied for the league lead in games started with 14 starts. All five of Donovan's wins this season have come in conference games, posting a 5-2 record in league games. Donovan is tied for 19th in the B1G in wins overall, but is tied for fourth in B1G only with the five wins, part of a seven-way tie for fourth, including USC's Mason Edwards, who was named the B1G Pitcher of the Year.Â
Additionally, Donovan is ninth in the B1G in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (2.26), with just 20 total walks in 79.2 IP. He is also 11th in the Big Ten with a 3.84 ERA. He had a stretch where he yielded just six earned runs in a span of four outings in 27.1 IP, for an ERA of 1.99 over those four starts. Highlighting that spurt was no earned runs in 7.0 IP vs. Iowa on March 20 and one earned run in 8.0 IP at Northwestern on April 3.
Donovan had six outings racking up five or more strikeouts, highlighted by a career-high seven Ks vs. Maryland on April 25 in 6.0 IP, topping his previous career-best that was set just two games before with six Ks vs. Michigan on April 11.
Donovan's award marks the fifth-straight season that a Spartan pitcher earned All-Big Ten honors, after Joseph Dzierwa was the B1G Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-B1G selection in 2025. Dzierwa was also a Second Team selection in 2024, while Wyatt Rush garnered Second Team accolades in 2023 and Kyle Bischoff was a Third Team selection in 2023.
Seymour, a native of Frankfurt, Illinois is the second Spartan first baseman to be the team's B1G Sportsmanship Award recipient, after Sam Busch earned the honor in 2025. Entering Tuesday's Big Ten Tournament, Seymour led MSU and ranks tied for seventh in the B1G with 16 home runs.
With the 16 home runs, Seymour is part of a four-way tie for No. 2 on MSU's single-season, tying Spartan great Kirk Gibson with 16 in 1978, along with Matt Riggins (1996) and Bob Malek (2002), for No. 2 on the list.
Donovan, Seymour are the No. 12 seed in the 2026 B1G Tournament, and knocked off No. 5 seed Purdue in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday in a game that started at 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT, and the Spartans pulled off the first upset of the tournament with an 8-4 Victory for MSU. Michigan State will face the winner of (8) Iowa and (9) Illinois on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT.
The 2026 B1G Baseball Tournament, Presented by IFS.ai, is held at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska, site of the NCAA Men's College World Series.
The Big Ten Network will broadcast every game of the tournament. Games will also be available on the FOX Sports App. Single-game and all-session packages are on sale at www.bigten.org/baseballtickets.
