Spartans Finish Second at Dale England Cup

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State took second place at the Dale England Cup in Bloomington on Saturday morning, with strong results up and down the lineup. The Spartans, who faced Indiana two weeks ago in the final session of the Big Ten Invitational in Sacramento, closed the margins in nearly all entries. The Spartans finished second in the points race, which was based on finishes in the NCAA boats: Indiana was first with 54 points, Michigan State was second with 30, and Tulsa completed the day with 24.Â

In the varsity eight race, the Spartans were edged by the Hoosiers by 2.2 seconds at the finish – IU in - 6:31.3 and Michigan State just under four seats back in a time of 6:33.5. At the B1G invite, IU and MSU finished third and fourth respectively with IU crossing in 6.32 and MSU in 6:44.273. Â
In the second varsity, the Spartans closed the margin from nearly 20 seconds two weeks ago to about a length on Saturday. The Spartans and Tulsa battled for second place through the sprint, with Tulsa earning the slimmest of victories by .3 seconds (6:53.3 - 6:53.6)
Rounding out the points races and NCAA boats was the varsity four where MSU was clocked in a time of 7:53.2, which shaved nearly 10 seconds off its margin behind IU from its previous meeting. The Spartans were also nearly four seconds better than third-place Tulsa.Â
In the 3V/novice eight, MSU turned the tables on the Golden Hurricane, taking its turn in coming ahead in a near photo-finish. MSU finished second in a time of 7:22.9, with Tulsa .4 seconds back.Â
Both Big Ten entries also fielded multiple fours. MSU and the Hoosier second varsity four race was settled by just under a length, with IU clocked in 7:49.7 to MSU's 7:53.1. The Spartans beat out two IU entries in the third varsity four competition – MSU crossed the line in 8:00.3, with IU's 3V4 in 8:09.2 and its 4V4 in 8:23.3.Â

Michigan State and Indiana are idle until the Big Ten Championships, which will be contested in Indianapolis at Eagle Creek Park on May 16-17.Â
