EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State hockey's Matt Basgall and Trey Augustine were named College Sports Communicators (CSC) At-Large Academic All-Americans for a second consecutive season on Wednesday afternoon. Basgall earned first team honors while Augustine was a second team selection, marking the fifth and sixth two-time Academic All-Americans in program history.
Basgall and Augustine were chosen from an expansive list of nominees across 10 NCAA men's sports in the CSC At-Large division. Additional sports included men's fencing, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. All Division I institutions were limited to six total nominees.
A kinesiology major, Basgall posted a 3.96 cumulative grade point average in 2025-26. Basgall joins Jeff Lerg, Tyler Harlton, Mike Gilmore, Walt Bartels, Don McSween, Kelly Miller, Ron Scott and Augustine as fellow first team selections in the program's history.
The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year this past season, Basgall served as team captain for the Spartans in his final campaign. Basgall tied for seventh on the team in points (18) and tied for the most points by a defenseman alongside Maxim Strbak. He only took two minor penalties all season and was second on the team in blocked shots (39).
A finance major, Augustine was named to the second team with a 3.88 cumulative grade point average. Augustine is one of only three players in program history to be named an All-American on and off the ice twice in his career alongside Ron Scott and Don McSween and is the first since McSween to do it (1986, 87).
Augustine's career concluded this past season where he earned the Mike Richter Award, presented to the nation's top NCAA Division I goaltender, alongside CCM/AHCA First Team All-America and Big Ten Goaltender of the Year honors. He finished his junior season ranked No. 3 nationally in wins (24), No. 6 in save percentage (.929) and No. 11 in goals-against average (2.11). With Augustine in net the Spartans scoring defense ranked No. 4 nationally. Augustine concluded his junior season with an 11-5-0 record against ranked opponents and a 10-2-0 record against teams ranked in the Top Five.
