EAST LANSING, Mich. - The culmination of a year-long search for former female athletes ended with a successful weekend of events at Michigan State University, Feb. 9-10. More than 200 former female athletes returned to their alma mater to receive their official varsity letter in a pair of ceremonies last weekend. Honorees and their families attended the Spartan women's basketball game against Illinois on Saturday (Feb. 9) night and were introduced during a halftime ceremony.
On Sunday, a banquet was held at the Kellogg Center where the honorees had the opportunity reunite with former teammates, coaches, and administrators and share fond memories of the past. The banquet featured comments from MSU President Peter McPherson, Provost LouAnna Simon, and Athletics Director Clarence Underwood.
A group of university dignitaries along with current and former Spartan coaches greeted the honorees as they were introduced and presented with their official varsity letter. The loudest ovation of the day was reserved for Eugenie White Westhauser, who played field hockey at MSU in the 1930s.
Following the presentation, the attendees were treated to a host of stories from three individuals who responded on behalf of the honorees. Betty Drobac, a field hockey coach spoke on behalf of athletes in the 50s, Sally Belloli, a field hockey player, represented the 60s, and former volleyball and basketball star Kathy DeBoer made comments on behalf of the athletes from the 70s.
