March 30, 1999
East Lansing, Mich. - Three Michigan State University student-athletes have been named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team for fall/winter sports. Senior field hockey player Melissa Pryor (Ann Arbor) was the top honoree, earning first team recognition. Sophomore hockey player Joe Blackburn (Livonia) and senior cross country runner Steve Schell (Dearborn), were named to the second team all-district squad.
Pryor has a 3.78 grade-point average in social relations, while Blackburn is a special education major with a 3.64 GPA. Schell is an electrical engineering major with a 3.54 GPA.
To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better and be a starter or important reserve. As a first team honoree, Pryor will go on the national ballot for GTE Academic All-America recognition. That squad will be announced in late April.
