April 25, 2001
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University and Infinity Broadcasting have reached a four-year agreement to air Spartan football and basketball games in Detroit.
Under the agreement, WXYT Radio (Team 1270) will carry all Michigan State football games and WWJ Radio (AM 950) will air all Spartan men's basketball games. Game-day coverage for Spartan football will begin one hour before kickoff while basketball's pregame programming will begin 45 minutes prior to tip-off. In addition, WXYT will be home to the weekly call-in shows for MSU head football coach Bobby Williams and head basketball coach Tom Izzo.
"It's great to have Michigan State back home with Infinity Broadcasting in Detroit," WXYT/WWJ General Manager Rich Homberg said. "Adding the Spartans to our other broadcast properties - including the Red Wings, Tigers and Lions - provides Detroit sports fans with the ultimate radio package."
"It's exciting for Michigan State athletics to have the opportunity to join forces with WXYT, Detroit's new sports leader, and WWJ, Detroit's only all news radio station," MSU Athletics Director Clarence Underwood said. "This partnership ensures tremendous coverage for MSU's football and basketball programs. We're looking forward to providing MSU fans in the Detroit market with the best programming possible not only on game days but throughout the year."
"This agreement also will provide the university with a broadened opportunity to convey important messages about MSU's academic mission and scope," MSU Vice President for University Relations Terry Denbow said.
