MSU Student-Athletes Recognized at Academic Gala
More than 200 student-athletes honored for success in the classroom.
April 30, 1999
East Lansing, MI - Michigan State University recently recognized more than 200 student-athletes at the annual Spartan Academic Excellence Gala on Sunday, April 18 at the Kellogg Center.
Richard Lapchick served as the keynote speaker for the banquet that honored student-athletes with grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Student-athletes received medallions commemorating their achievement, while the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average from each of the 24 sports also was recognized.
Lapchick is the founder and director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society. Since its inception in 1984, the Center has attracted national attention to its pioneering efforts to ensure the education of athletes from junior high school through the professional ranks. The Center helped form the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), a group of over 165 colleges and universities that have adopted the Center's programs.
Considered among the nation's experts on sports issues, Lapchick has served as an advisor to the Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Commission on Fairness in Sport and to the players associations of the NBA and NFL on the issue of racial hiring practices in sport.
The son of Joe Lapchick, the famous original Boston Celtics center who became a legendary coach for St. John's and the New York Knicks, Richard was the American leader of the international campaign to boycott South Africa in sport for more than 20 years.
Football player Josh Thornhill received the Outstanding Freshman Student-Athlete Award for his success in the classroom and on the playing field in his first year. Soccer player Jennifer Hanink was presented with the Ingham Regional Medical Center I've Got Heart Servant Leadership Award for her outstanding service to the community this year.
