Thirty-Eight MSU Athletes Named Academic All-Big Ten
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State had 38 athletes named Academic All-Big Ten for the spring season, the conference announced on Wednesday. To be elligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, an athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better.
The softball team had the most honorees with seven, led by senior Stacey Smith (Princeton Junction, N.J.) who was also named to the Second-Team Great Lake All Region team. The softball team finished the season bosting a 47-22 record while ranked 13th in the final regular season USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
The women's track and field team had five players honored, including junior distance runner Becky Caldwell (Wyandotte, Mich.) who led all five athletes with a 3.70 GPA.
Four men's hockey players were honored with junior Tyler Harlton (Pense, Sask.) leading the way both in the classroom and on the ice. Harlton not only led the team with a 3.69 GPA, but was also named the CCHA's Best Defensive Defenseman.
Also sporting four All-Big Ten winners was the men's track and field team, with junior distance runner Jim Marccro (Monroe, Mich.) leading the way, posting a 3.63.
Two women's golfers battled for the top GPA honors on the golf team, while four of the women were honored. Sophomore Meggan Schumaker (Columbia City, Ind.) and sophomore Ellen Bishop (New Castle, Ind.) posted 3.84 and 3.85 GPA's respectively over the course of the year.
The men and women's tennis teams each had three players named to the team. Senior Aaron Murray (Traverse City, Mich.) posted a 3.65 GPA for the men while junior Kendra Barry (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) led the women with a 3.57 GPA.
The men's fencing team had three athletes named, including sophomore Dan Cantillon (Troy, Mich.) who posted a 49-13 record on the season and finished 24th in the EPEE in the NCAA tournament. Cantillon also sported a 3.83 GPA.
Three players were named from the Spartan baseball team, including sophomore Tom Hartley (White Lake, Mich.), who was named the Most Improved Player on the Spartan team this season, while also compiling a 3.82 GPA.
A pair of men's golfers were named, sophomore Matt Riogle (East Lansing, Mich.) and sophomore Jamie Van Ravensway (Okemos, Mich.) were both honored.
