EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 12 Michigan State softball team opened its home season on Old College Field in style Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a pair of games from Detroit, 12-1 (5) and 4-1. The Spartans improved their record to 30-8 overall with Big Ten Conference action starting this weekend.
Junior pitcher Jackie Hall (Mississauga, Ont.) tossed a three-hit five-inning complete game for her seventh win of the year in the first game of the doubleheader. Sophomore catcher Molly Hugan (Holly) capped off an eight-run second inning with a three-run homerun, the first of her collegiate career. Eight of ten Spartans got hits, while six picked up RBI.
Senior pitcher Stacey Smith (Princeton Jct., N.J.) went the distance picking up her 16th complete-game win in the second game. Smith struck out eight while allowing two hits and one unearned run.
