MSU Sweeps Doubleheader From Ohio State
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State softball pitcher Stacey Smith broke the single-season record for wins, picking up two wins as the Spartans swept Ohio State Sunday by scores of 2-1 and 3-2.
Michigan State (40-9) had to go extra innings in both games en route to extending its winning streak to seven games.
In game one, both teams scored in the first inning and were kept scoreless until the Spartans scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game.
Stephanie Giroux started the eighth with a double and was advanced to third on a passed ball. After Stefanie Noffsinger walked, Jacqueline Hall, pinch hitting for Carrie Carpenter, singled, scoring Giroux with the winning run.
Smith picked up her 23 victory for the Spartans, allowing only three hits and one unearned run.
In game two, the Spartans scored a run in the sixth inning to deadlock the game at two. The score remained that way until Michigan State scored another run in the 12th inning to break the tie.
Shortstop Keri Lemasters went 4-for-6 in the game, pacing MSU, which finished the game with 13 hits.
Smith came on in relief, pitching the last 4.1 innings to earn her 24th victory.
The Spartans return to action at home Tuesday with a doubleheader against Indiana, starting at 2:00 p.m.
