Dr. Tom Mackowiak has been a member of the Michigan State University Athletic Training staff since August 1987. Currently, he is the graduate Athletic Training Program's Clinical Education Coordinator working with Dr. Tracey Covassin in clinical athletic training student education, placement, and evaluation. In addition, he is involved in daily health care coverage for the Michigan State women's golf program.
Mackowiak is the full-time staff athletic trainer directly assigned with the Spartan women's golf program. He completed 24 seasons of daily health care coverage directly with the Michigan State University men's basketball program and transitioned into five years of assisting with patient care coverage with the MSU men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs.
Mackowiak received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree from Ball State University with a major in Special Education and a minor in Athletic Training. He completed his Master of Science Degree at Michigan State in 1981 while completing his Athletic Training Graduate Assistantship. Mackowiak served as the first head Athletic Trainer at East Lansing High School in 1980-1981. He is a former Michigan Athletic Trainers Society membership chairperson.
An adjunct instructor in the Department of Kinesiology at MSU, Mackowiak assists in the recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students while assisting with the education and proficiency development of the undergraduate athletic training students. He was a co-advisor for the MSU athletic training student organization and was the Director of an annual Michigan State University High School Athletic Training Student Workshop.
Mackowiak attained his Doctorate Degree from Michigan State University in 2005. His research was titled "An Evaluation of Planned Change: Accredited Undergraduate Athletic Training Educational Programs." He is certified from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), a NG360 Nike Golf Performance Specialist powered by the Gray Institute and Certified in Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation.
