Head Coach Kim Chavers announced the addition of volunteer assistant coach Deb Hunt to the rowing program in winter 2021. Deb recently relocated from Texas but is no stranger to the Michigan State University Rowing Program. As a collegiate athlete herself, Deb walked on to the Michigan State Crew Club, where she learned to row and held officer positions that helped set the wheels in motion for a successful rowing club that eventually turned into the Varsity Women’s Rowing program at Michigan State.
Deb attended Michigan State University from 1984-1989 earning her degree in Public Affairs Management. Deb also holds a Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics through Michigan State University and The University of Houston. Deb has worked at the Methodist Hospital’s Center for Medical Weight Management and is a nutrition blogger and researcher in her spare time. Deb brings her experience as a collegiate rower to the Michigan State Women’s program having rowed at MSU in the women’s lightweight 8 and 4, and has also helped coach novice rowers while attending graduate school. Deb has continued her love of rowing throughout the years rowing both nationally and internationally. Deb is also US Rowing Certified Level I and is working on her Level II certification. Through it all Deb is probably most proud of her 2 children. Her son RJ joined her this fall in Michigan and currently attends MSU as a junior in Kinesiology. Her daughter Alexandra still resides in Texas and is graduating this fall from the University of Texas with a degree in Bio-Chem.
The teamwork and commitment needed to compete with 7 other girls in a boat, the dedication it takes to keep up with the conditioning and be on the water at 6am most mornings, and the pride felt after the last oar pull takes you across the finish line have all kept her fire for the sport burning. Deb is excited to give back to Spartan Rowing, she will be leading the alumni and parent activities, and helping on the water as needed. This coming year Deb will also be working on a couple different avenues, an important one being the LinkedIn group.
