Field Hockey Falls To No. 3 Iowa, 2-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 15 Michigan State field hockey team lost, 2-1, to No. 3 Iowa Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The loss drops MSU to 8-6 on the season, 1-4 in the Big Ten, while Iowa improves to 10-1, 4-1.
Spartan sophomore Kate Wade (Harwich, Mass.) gave MSU a 1-0 lead at the 28:15 mark of the first half when fellow sophomore Maureen Halstead (N. Dartmouth, Mass.) picked up a rebound and tipped a pass to Wade. Iowa tied the score at 23:05 on a goal by Leslie Irvine.
The game was delayed for 20 minutes after MSU sophomore Marleen Tuip (Eindhoven, Netherlands) took a stick to the throat with 15:47 remaining in the first half and was taken from the field on a stretcher.
Michigan State had a chance to take the lead on a penalty stroke with 8:47 to go in the first half, but sophomore Bridget Cooper?s (Winnetka, Ill.) attempt was wide right.
The Hawkeyes got the game-winning goal with 18:53 left in regulation off the stick of Lauren Edwards.
MSU now hits the road for three consecutive Big Ten games, beginning Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. against Michigan. The Spartans then travel to Iowa on Oct. 22 and Northwestern on Oct. 24.
