NOTES:
? The Spartans improve to 5-0 for just the second time since 1966. MSU went 5-0 to open the 1997 season and won the first nine games of 1966 before tying Notre Dame in the season finale.
? QB Bill Burke completed 12-of-14 passes for 150 yards and tied his career high with four touchdowns. Burke has thrown a touchdown pass in nine consecutive games and today, tied his own mark (vs. Central Michigan, 1998) for touchdown passes in game. The mark is also held by Ed Smith (vs. Wisconsin, 1978), Mike Rasmussen (vs. Indiana, 1970) and Gene Glick (vs. Iowa State, 1948).
? Spartan quarterbacks threw an MSU single-game record six touchdown passes today, led by Bill Burke's record-tying four. Backup Ryan Van Dyke, who completed 8-of-13 passes for 147, threw a career-high two touchdown passes. MSU threw five touchdowns in a game against Northwestern in 1981.
? Burke has thrown at least one TD pass in each of his last nine games. He has 37 career TD passes and needs only seven more to set the MSU career record (currently 43, shared by Ed Smith and Dave Yarema).
? WR Plaxico Burress' 32-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter was his first TD reception since last year's Penn State contest (61 yards).
? Burress caught 6 passes for 95 yards and three touchdowns, tying the MSU single-game mark for touchdown receptions. Burress tied the record held by Andre Rison (vs. Georgia, 1989), Mark Ingram (vs. Iowa, 1986) and Gene Washington (vs. Indiana, 1965).
? Iowa was held to one 1st-half first down, that coming on the Hawkeyes' first offensive play of the game. Iowa picked up its second first down of the game with 7:13 left in the third quarter when it crossed midfield for the first time.
? WR Herb Haygood caught two passes for 46 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown from Ryan Van Dyke in the third quarter for his first career TD reception.
? Cedric Henry returned the first punt return of his career 70 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
? The Spartans have not allowed a rushing TD in five-straight games, the first stretch of five games MSU has not allowed a rushing TD since joining the Big Ten in 1953.
? MSU improves to 56-25-3 in 84 Homecoming games.
