Spartans Fall To Michigan In Season' First Dual

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan and Michigan State met for the first of two dual meets of the 1999-2000 season in Jenison Wrestling Arena on Friday, Dec. 10 and did not disappoint. Both teams came in ranked in the top 10 - Michigan State at No. 7 and Michigan at No. 8-with the Wolverines holding on for a 19-15 win. The loss drops Michigan State to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten, while Michigan begins the season 1-0, 1-0.
The meet started at 165 pounds with Michigan?s Jason Rawls scoring a 6-2 decision over No. 13 Greg DeGrand. Otto Olson defeated No. 13 Will Hill, 5-2, at 174 and Andy Hrovat pinned James Brimm in 1:16 at 184 to give the Wolverines a 12-0 lead to start the meet.
?That fall set us back,? said MSU Head Coach Tom Minkel. ?Its difficult when you give up a fall like that because they take our crowd out of it and gain a ton of momentum.?
MSU then closed the gap with wins in the next three matches. No. 1-ranked Nick Muzashvili scored an 11-6 win over Joe DeGain at 197, heavyweight Matt Lamb pulled out a 3-2 win against No. 9 Matt Bing and No. 19 Chris Williams edged A.J. Grant, 6-5, at 125, bringing the Spartans to within three points at 12-9.
Michigan?s Joe Warren, ranked No. 4 at 133 pounds, got a 20-7 decision over Jason Nusbaum and the Wolverines? Damion Logan downed Mike Castillo, 5-2, at 141 to put U of M up 19-9, but Michigan State made it interesting with wins in the final two matches. Cory Posey pulled out a 7-6 win over Dan Seder at 149 and No. 17 Gray Maynard defeated Tony Holifield 11-6 to make the final score 19-15.
?Michigan is a good team,? said Minkel, ?and we didn?t wrestle up to our potential tonight. They got the momentum and we couldn?t come back.?
The Spartans return to action Dec. 29-30 when they travel to the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.
