11 MSU Wrestlers Place At Penn State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team placed 11 individuals among the top six in their weight class at the Penn State Open on Sunday in State College, Pa. Senior 197-pounder Nick Muzashvili was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament after going 5-0, including a win by pinfall in the championhip match, and outscoring his opponents 56-16. No team scores were kept.
Muzashvili, ranked No. 1 in the nation by both InterMat Wrestling and Amateur Wrestling News, pinned Todd Hockenbroch of Bloomburg to claim the championship. Muzashvili has won all four tournamnets he has entered this season.
Sophomore Chris Williams took second place at 125, while junior Corey Posey at 149, freshman Gray Maynard at 157, senior Greg DeGrand at 165 and junior Matt Lamb at heavyweight all finished third in their respective weight classes.
Freshman Karl Nadolsky came in fourth at 149, senior Will Hill took fourth at 174 and junior Joe Cotant was fourth at 184. Junior Mike Castillo placed fifth at 141 and freshman Charlie Sageman rounded out the Spartan place-winners with a sixth-place showing at 141.
MSU opens its dual meet season next weekend with a Dec. 10 showdown against the intrastate rival Michigan Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. in Jenison Wrestling Arena. The Spartans will then be off until Dec. 29 when they head to the Midlands Champiopnships in Evanston, Ill.
