OVERVIEW
MSU Head Coach Joe Baum will have a tested team to work with in 1999 as the Spartans look to bounce back from a 7-12 won-lost slate a year ago ... Fifteen letterwinners, including eight starters, are back in hopes of leading MSU to its first winning campaign since 1996 ... MSU's strength should lie in its goalkeeping and backfield ... Junior T.J. Lieckfelt is the incumbent at goalie after starting 18 games last year and finishing with a 1.52 goals-against average ... Baum is enthusiastic about the backline which is spearheaded by junior Jon Benoist at the sweeper position ... Senior Brady Demling, along with 98 redshirts Keith Gordon and Scott Babinski, also figure to contribute significantly on defense ... The midfield should be a productive area with sophomore Steve Arce and senior Hal Howell battling for a starting role at attack mid ... Junior wing mid Rick Smith should challenge for postseason acclaim while Shervin Motaghi could turn in some big numbers if healthy at the other wing post ... MSU's big concern will be consistent goal production ... Steve Williford, a 98 redshirt is a fine all-around player and will start at one striker position ... Sophomore Brett Konley is slated for the other starting spot after starting 16 of 18 games last season.
