Men's Gymnastics Opens Season at Windy City Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State's men's gymnastics team opened its season by placing fifth in a seven team meet hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago. Iowa placed first with a team score of 226.675, followed by Ohio State with a 225.000, Michigan with a 224.050, and Illinois with a 223.400. Other teams that preceded Michigan State were UIC with a team score 221.050 and Minnesota at 216.550.
Sophomore Chris Weedon opened up his 1999 season with a solid finish, placing first on still rings with a 9.700 and fourth on floor exercise with a 9.700. Senior Mike Phipps finished alongside Weedon on still rings with a 9.600. Other Spartans that finished in the top three in each event were Freshman Jon Plante, who made his Spartan debut competing in the all-around, earned a first place on the pommel horse with a 9.750.
Last year at the Windy City Invitational, Michigan State finished 6th out of 7 teams with a team score of 217.300. Tommy Housely set a season high at that meet with a 51.450. MSU moves to 2-4 on the season. The team travels to Ohio State next weekend for a dual meet with the Buckeyes on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
