East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State recently closed out another great season. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals before falling to DePaul.
The Final Record
MSU finished the season with a 41-23 mark and was fourth in the Big Ten with a 13-9 record. The Spartans posted a 10-5 record in their last 15 games of the season.

MSU Breaks Into Poll
In the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, MSU was ranked No. 14, its first top 25 ranking of the season.
The Spartans, who received votes in all but two of this year's polls, have not been ranked in the top 25 since April 1, 1998 (No. 25).
The last time the Spartans were ranked in the final poll of the year was in 1997 when they were No. 24.
MSU is the highest ranked Big Ten team in the final poll. In addition to the Spartans, Michigan (No. 16) and Minnesota (No. 22) also represent the conference.

Spartans Get A Step Closer In Second NCAA Tourney Appearance
MSU advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals in just its second NCAA appearance ever.
The Spartans were 2-2 in NCAA Regional 8 action this season, falling twice to champion DePaul, 4-1 and 2-0. The Blue Demons went on to tie for third at the College World Series.
MSU earned its first bid to the NCAA Tournament in 1997 when it was an at-large selection. The Spartans went 1-2 in regional play in Ann Arbor (Region 6), losing twice to Central Michigan.

STARS IN THE CLASSROOM
Two Spartans Earn GTE First-Team Academic All-America Honors
Senior Carrie Carpenter (Dearborn Heights) and junior Margaret Hollis (Anaheim, Calif.) have been named to the GTE Academic All-America Softball First Team.
Hollis' 3.95 grade-point average in microbiology was second highest among the 22 players honored on either the first or second team, while Carpenter has a 3.64 GPA in family community services.
Carpenter and Hollis are just the third and fourth players in MSU softball history to earn first team honors. Deanne Moore was the first-ever Spartan softball player to earn first team recoginition in 1983, while Patti Raduenz was a first team honoree in 1996.
Overall, MSU softball players have earned GTE Academic All-America honors (1st, 2nd or 3rd team) on 10 occasions, including six times since 1994 when head coach Jacquie Joseph took over the program.
To be eligible for GTE Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better and be a starter or important reserve.
Three Spartans Earn Regional All-Tournament Honors
Three Spartans were named to the NCAA Regional 8 All-Tournament team.
Senior Molly Hugan (Holly), junior Carrie Fry (Cerritos, Calif.) and sophomore Shealee Dunavan (Yorba Linda, Calif.) were recognized for their play in regional action.
Fry led all Spartans with a .500 batting average (7-14) in four games. She also contributed four RBI, scored two runs, had a double and a sacrifice, while extending her hitting streak to nine games.
Fry also earned regional all-tournament team honors as a freshman in 1997.
Dunavan hit .357 (5-14) with five RBI and scored four runs for MSU. She also had a triple, a homer and a stolen base.
Hugan closed out her Spartan career by hitting .286 (4-14) in regional play. She added three RBI and hit her fourth homer of the season.
Dunavan, Carpenter Garner All-Region Recognition
Junior Shealee Dunavan (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and senior Carrie Carpenter (Dearborn Heights) were named to the Great Lakes All-Region Second Team.
Carpenter Named First-Team All-Big Ten; Four Others Honored
The 1999 All-Big Ten teams were announced at the conference tournament in Ann Arbor on May 14 and Michigan State was well-represented.
Senior outfielder Carrie Carpenter was named First-Team All-Big Ten, while sophomore Shealee Dunavan and juniors Carrie Fry and Stacey Phillips (St. Clair Shores) were named to the second team. Senior Molly Hugan earned third-team all-conference honors.
Carpenter is just the eighth player in school history to earn First-Team All-Big Ten honors and the first since Keri Lemasters in 1996. This is the first year Carpenter has been recognized with any all-conference honor.
Fry and Phillips earned second team all-league honors for the second-straight season, while Dunavan and Hugan are first-time honorees.

The Coach
Jacquie Joseph finished her sixth year as the head coach. The Spartan mentor has posted a record of 202-151 (.572) at MSU and has a career mark of 338-284 (.543) in 11 years in the collegiate ranks.
Joseph spent five years as the head coach at Bowling Green prior to being named the fourth head coach in MSU history.
The Flint native has guided MSU to four-straight 30-win seasons, 40 victories in two of the last three years and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1997, 1999).
Joseph completed a four-year term as president of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in December of 1998 and currently serves on the Board as the past President.
Joseph Records 200th Victory
Head Coach Jacquie Joseph picked up her 200th win at Michigan State in the Spartans 8-3 victory over Iowa on May 8. The Spartan mentor joins Gloria Becksford as the only two coaches in MSU history to win 200 games.
Joseph reached another significant milestone earlier this season when she recorded her 300th career victory in MSU's 4-3 win over Illinois State on Feb. 20, 1999.
40 Wins MSU defeated Cornell, 9-1, in NCAA Tournament action on May 21 to reach the 40-win mark for the second time in the last three years.
The 1999 squad is just the third MSU team to record 40 wins in a season. The 1997 team won a record 47 games, while the 1981 squad was victorious 42 times.
The Spartans have posted four-straight 30-win seasons, a first in program history.

Working Overtime
MSU played five extra inning games in 1999 and was 4-1 in those contests.
The Spartans defeated Ohio State on April 18 in eight innings in their last extra inning game.
One Run Games
The Spartans were 13-4 in one-run games this season.
Lead Was Safe With Spartans
MSU was 33-2 this season when leading after the fifth inning of a game.
One of the Spartans' losses came against Iowa on May 8. In game two of the series, MSU held a 3-1 lead after the fifth, but the Hawkeyes scored one run in the sixth and three in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-3 victory.
The only other setback for MSU was its 5-4 loss to Purdue on April 10. The Boilermakers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the victory.
Against Nationally Ranked Teams
Michigan State was 6-7 against nationally ranked teams this season.
The Spartans posted wins against Iowa (No. 16), Masachusetts (No. 10), Florida (No. 25), Texas (No. 7), South Florida (No. 14) and Oregon (No. 19), while dropping two contests to No. 6 Michigan, No. 18 Arizona State and No. 18 DePaul, and a single contest to 11th-ranked Oklahoma.
Dunavan Finishes Third On Single-Season Hit Chart
Sophomore Shealee Dunavan reached the 70-hit mark against Iowa on May 14, becoming just the second player in MSU history to record 70 hits in a season.
Dunavan finished the year with 75 hits, good for third on the single-season chart behind Keri Lemasters, who topped the mark twice.
Junior Carrie Fry collected a career-high 65 hits in 1999 to rank fourth on the seasonal chart.

Shea's Banner Year
Sophomore Shealee Dunavan turned in an outstanding season in her second year with the Spartans.
The Yorba Linda, Calif. native successfully made the switch to first base after starting 54 games in rightfield as a rookie.
A Second-Team All-Big Ten selection, she led the team and tied for fourth in the Big Ten with a .383 batting average, good for fourth on the MSU single-season chart.
The lefty, who had a .592 slugging percentage, was fifth in the Big Ten with 75 hits and also ranked among the conference leaders in doubles (15/3rd), triples (4/3rd) and total bases (116/3rd).
Dunavan had at least one hit in 50-of-63 games in 1999 and produced 20 multiple-hit contests.
Big Time Fry
One of MSU's most consistent performers throughout the season was junior Carrie Fry.
The second baseman hit .316 overall with and had career highs in hits (65) and RBI (32). Fry was also MSU's second-leading hitter in Big Ten play with a .361 average.
Fry has also proven to be MSU's top offensive threat in postseason play. She hit .500 (7-14) in NCAA Regional action, while earning NCAA Region 8 All-Tournament team honors.
Fry, who also earned NCAA all-tournament team honors as a rookie in 1997, is hitting .545 (12-22) all-time in NCAA Tournament action.
Hitting Streaks
Junior Carrie Fry will take a career-high nine-game hitting streak into the 2000 campaign.
Sophomore Shealee Dunavan had a career-best 12-game hitting streak earlier this year, while Fry previously put together an eight-game streak.

Senior Salute
MSU will lose three seniors from its 1999 squad, Carrie Carpenter, Molly Hugan and Tiffany Yager.
The three players had a positive impact during their four years in East Lansing, guiding the Spartans to 159 victories, the most by any senior class in the 26-year history of MSU softball.
They also helped the Spartans earn two NCAA Tournament appearances, while their names will dot the MSU record books.
Carrie Carpenter
Senior Carrie Carpenter saved the best for last, turning in a career year in her final season as a Spartan.
The centerfielder was second on the team with a career-high .344 batting average, good for seventh on the MSU single-season chart.
Carpenter also stole 23 bases in 1999, good for second on the seasonal chart. She ended her career as MSU's all-time leader in that category with 60 steals.
The Dearborn Heights native also proved to be a stellar defensive player, running down numerous balls in the outfield and committing just one error in 95 chances this season.
A four-year starter, Carpenter led the Spartans with a .380 average in conference play to earn First-Team All-Big Ten honors.
She ends her career ranked among MSU's all-time leaders in games played (231/2nd), batting average (.286/8th), at bats (549/T-6th), hits (157/T-7th), runs (98/T-2nd), walks (47/8th) and sacrifices (43/2nd).
Molly Hugan
Senior Molly Hugan also had a banner year in her final season in East Lansing. The Spartan catcher, who had a career batting average of .243 prior to this season, was third on team with a career-high .320 average.
She led the team and was seventh in the Big Ten with 37 RBI, good for a fifth place tie on the MSU single-season chart.
Hugan also showed tremendous versatility at the plate in 1999. The Holly native had a .444 slugging percentage, while leading the team with 16 sacrifices.
A Third-Team All-Big Ten selection, Hugan was the only player on the team to start all 64 games this season.
Hugan ends her career ranked among MSUs all-time leaders in games played (213/4th), hits (137/11th), RBI (77/T-5th), home runs (6/T-7th) and sacrifices (32/6th).
Tiffany Yager
Tiffany Yager was a four-year starter in the outfield, playing in 213 games during her career.
The Mt. Pleasant native struggled at the plate in 1999, but was still a big part of the Spartan offense.
She had a .331 on-base percentage and led the team in stolen bases with 27. Her 27 steals ranked fifth in the Big Ten this year and topped her own seasonal record of 19 set in 1998.
Yager was third on the team in runs scored with 30 and drew a team-high 20 walks. Yager closes out her career ranked among MSUs career leaders in games played (213/4th), hits (102/23rd), runs (98/T-2nd), walks (54/5th), stolen bases (55/2nd) and sacrifices (37/4th).
Phillips Joins Elite Group
Heading into NCAA Regional play, junior Stacey Phillips needed just one RBI to become the third player in MSU history to drive in 100 runs in a career.
Phillips collected her milestone RBI in a big way, by hitting her fifth home run of the year in MSUs 9-0 win over Cornell on May 21.
Phillips, who ranks third all-time with 101 RBI, trails Keri Lemasters (108) and Patti Raduenz (104) on the all-time chart.
Strutz Has Big Impact In Junior Season
Junior Erica Strutz made big strides in her third year as a Spartan. After spending her first two campaigns as a part-time starter and reliever, Strutz became MSU's top pitcher on a staff that featured three rookies.
Strutz responded by posting a 27-14 record with a career-best 1.97 ERA.
The Howell native threw a one-hitter against Eastern Michigan on April 14 to become just the third pitcher in school history to record 20 wins in a season.
Her 27 victories rank second on the MSU single-season chart and rank among the top 20 in the nation in 1999.
Strutz appeared in 47 of MSU's 64 games this season and threw over half of the innings (241.1), while the Spartans other three pitchers combined to pitch 192.0 innings.
Strutz, who was MSU's only returning pitcher from last season, had 160 strikeouts (2nd on MSU seasonal chart) and just 57 walks in 1999.
In three seasons, Strutz has posted a 41-19 record with a 2.04 ERA.
Rookie Rewind
Freshmen Becky Gray, Tiffany Thomas and Amanda Melton turned out to be key contributors in their first year of action.
Gray made tremendous progress throughout the season, posting a 13-7 mark on the mound with a 2.02 ERA.
The Burr Oak native, who threw 142.1 innings, tied for fourth in the Big Ten with six shutouts, good for a fifth place tie on the MSU seasonal chart.
She threw the first no-hitter of her collegiate career in MSU's 12-0 win over Western Michigan on April 6 becoming the first Spartan rookie to throw a no-hitter since Diane Kennett in 1982.
Thomas started 59 games for the Spartans in right field. She was fifth on the team with a .268 batting average. She contributed 52 hits, 23 RBI and didn't make an error in 72 chances.
Melton became a fixture at third base despite never playing the position at any level prior to this season.
She started 59 games and hit .230 with 35 hits and 20 RBI.
She had the best offensive day of her collegiate career against Iowa on May 8.
Melton broke the MSU single-game record with six RBI against the Hawkeyes. Four of her RBI came in the form of a grand slam in the fifth inning, the first homer of her career.

Home Run Trot A Little Rusty
It took 176 games and 493 at-bats, but junior Carrie Fry recorded the first home run of her collegiate career with a solo shot against Iowa on May 8.
More On The Long Ball
Michigan State hit 21 home runs in 1999, double its output from a year ago.
The Spartans 21 homers tie for second on the MSU single-season chart for team home runs. The 1997 Spartan squad hit a record 22 round trippers, while the 1996 team turned out 21 homers.
More Team Stuff
The Spartans were third in the Big Ten in hitting with a .283 overall average. MSU ranked sixth in pitching (2.31 ERA) and fourth in fielding with a .956 average.
In Big Ten play, MSU was second with a .300 average in conference play. The Spartans ranked fifth in pitching (2.34 ERA) and ninth in fielding (.939).
Academic Success
Four Michigan State players have been named to the GTE Academic All-District IV Softball Team.
Senior Carrie Carpenter and juniors Margaret Hollis and Erica Strutz have been named to the first team, while sophomore Shealee Dunavan has been named to the second team.
Carpenter, who is a first-time honoree, carries a 3.64 grade-point average in family community services.
Hollis, who was a Second-Team Academic All-American in 1998, shared top GPA honors on the district squad with a 3.95 average in microbiology.
Strutz, who was a first-team all-district honoree last year as well, has a 3.54 GPA in history. Dunavan carries a 3.21 GPA.
More From The Classroom
Seven players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors from the conference.
Carrie Carpenter, Shealee Dunavan, Carrie Fry, Margaret Hollis, Molly Hugan, Erica Strutz and Tiffany Yager represented MSU on the squad.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a letterwinner and have a cumulative GPA or 3.0 or better.
Shea and TT To Represent USA
Sophomore Shealee Dunavan recently received an invitation from the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball to play in the 1999 Coca-Cola USA Softball Women's National Team Festival.
The Festival, which runs from June 10-13 in Fresno, Calif., features a who's who of women's fastpitch softball, including members of the 1999 USA Softball National Team.
The ASA and USA will select five of the almost 50 players to round out the Pan American team that will attempt to win its fourth consecutive title in Winnipeg, Canada, July 23-August 6.
Last fall, freshman Tiffany Thomas was named to the 1999 USA Junior Girls World team that will compete in the ISF World Championship in Taipei, Tawain, June 17-26. The Junior Girls Team will also play exhibition games during the Coca-Cola Classic in Fresno.
