LAST WEEKS RESULTS: Finished 4th/15 teams at Big Ten/Big 12 Shootout
CAPPING OFF THE FALL: Michigan State closes out its most successfull fall season in two decades this weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational in Bonita Bay, Fla. The Spartans return to the tournament where they finished fourth out of six team last year with hopes of capturing a fourth tournament championship of the fall season. The Invitational features a 13-team field this year, including fellow Big Ten foes Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin. The par-72, 5,896-yard Cypress Course hosts the tournament, which will consist of 18 holes each on Friday and Saturday.
RESPECT IN THE RANKINGS: The Spartans outstanding fall start was reflected in the latest national rankings released in the Oct. 24 issue of Golfweek. Michigan State stands tied for ninth in the nation in the Golfweek/Taylor Made rankings with Auburn on the strength of team championships at the Mary Fossum Invitational, the Wolverine Invitational and, most important, the Lady Northern. The rankings are based upon a point system determined by team finishes at major tournaments, and were updated through Oct. 15. Michigan State has 65 points.
TAKING ON THE NATIONS BEST: Michigan State claimed fourth place in the Big Ten/Big 12 Shootout in Franklin, Ind., Oct. 12-13. The 15-team tournament included soem of the nations top talent, including first-place Texas, which was just 10 strokes ahead of MSU. It was a record-setting outing for the Spartans, who posted a team record 292 in the first round behind sophomore Kasey Gants 68, the lowest individual single round in Spartan history. Gant finished with a 68-74-77=219, tying for third on the individual standings.
