9/2/1999 12:00:00 AM | Football
Sept. 2, 1999
ATTENDANCE: 72,923 (sellout, Michigan State has already sold out every home game of 1999)
SERIES RECORD: The series with Oregon is now tied, 2-2. Michigan State is now 66-35-2 all-time in season openers and 82-21-0 all-time in home openers.
NOTES: , WR Gari Scott had 6 catches for 107 yards and two TDs. He has at least one reception in each of the last 25 games, dating back to the 1997 season opener. Scott?s two TDs equal his career high, set Dec. 25, 1997, vs. Washington in the Jeep Aloha Bowl. He now has 14 career TD catches, tying him for fifth all-time at MSU with Mark Ingram and Bob Carey. He also broke into the top 10 in MSU career receptions with 110, good for an 8th place tie with Scott Greene on the all-time chart.
, Scott?s 49-yard punt return in the third quarter was a career long and moved him past Jim Ellis (619) and Derrick Mason (620) to establish a new MSU career record for punt return yards (652).
, With 107 receiving yards and 115 return yards, Scott surpassed the 3,000-yard mark for career all-purpose yards with 3,093.
, CB Amp Campbell?s 85-yard fumble return for a TD was the fourth-longest turnover return in Spartan history and second-longest fumble return (Earl Morrall, 90 yards, vs. Purdue, 1955). It was Campbell?s second defensive TD ? the first was an interception return vs. Western Michigan in 1997.
, Campbell had 2 pass break-ups, giving him the MSU career record with 32. He previously shared the record of 30 career passes broken up with Ray Hill.
, QB Bill Burke had 205 yards passing, his fifth consecutive game with 200-plus yards. He becomes only the second MSU QB (Ed Smith, six in a row in 1978) to string together five straight 200-yard passing games. MSU is 6-2 all-time when Burke throws for at least 200 yards.
, Burke threw 2 TD passes, giving him 28 for his career. That moves him into third on the MSU all-time list, passing Todd Schultz. He needs 16 more to set the school record, currently shared by Dave Yarema and Ed Smith with 43 career TDs each.
, Senior TB Lloyd Clemons rushed for a career-best 121 yards. Michigan State went the last four games of 1998 without a 100-yard rusher. Michigan State improves to 18-6-1 under Nick Saban when a player rushes for 100 yards. His previous career high was 95 yards rushing against the Ducks last year, giving him 216 of his 496 career yards (43.5 percent) against the Ducks.
, Oregon rushed for 28 yards. MSU last held an opponent to under 50 yards rushing vs. Northwestern Oct. 31, 1998 (6 yards).
, Oregon QB A.J. Feeley threw for 343 yards, the first 300-yard passing game against the Spartans since Chris Redman for Louisville threw for 325 yards Sept. 21, 1996 (a span of 33 games without allowing a 300-yard passer). Feeley?s 49 pass attempts are the fourth-best single-game effort against MSU.
, Oregon P Kurtis Doerr?s 75-yard second-quarter punt was the fourth-longest ever kicked against the Spartans and the longest since Monte Robbins (Michigan) kicked a 78-yard punt in 1978. The longest punt in Oregon history was 78 yards, by Mike Preacher vs. Nebraska in 1986.
, Michigan State has won all three night games in Spartan Stadium history: tonight, Sept. 12, 1998 vs. Notre Dame and Sept. 7, 1987 vs. Southern Cal.
, The win marked MSU?s first over a Pac-10 opponent in its last four tries, since a 17-16 victory over Southern Cal in the 1990 John Hancock Bowl. It is MSU?s first regular-season victory vs. a Pac-10 team since beating Southern Cal Sept. 12, 1987.
