EAST LANSING, Mich. - MSU won its fourth dual of the season in convincing fashion as the Spartans posted a 35-12 victory over the Golden Flashes from Kent. In all, seven MSU wrestlers emerged victorious in Sunday?s meet. Leading the way for the Spartans was 149-punder Cory Posey (Jr., Columbia, Tenn.), who pinned Kent?s Sam Murdock in 5:41.
Greg DeGrand (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) got the Spartans off to a fast start with a 7-2 victory over Kent?s Nick Nemeth in the 165 pound division. Following DeGrand?s cue for MSU was 174-pounder John Wechter (Fr., Saginaw, Mich.), who pushed the Spartans out front 6-0 with a 6-2 decision over Ryan Kinley.
Following a 14-9 setback suffered by Joe Cotant (Jr., Bloomfield, Mich.) at the hands of Kent?s Nick Magistrelli in the 184 pound division, MSU regrouped to win two straight matches behind the efforts of Nick Muzashvili (Sr., Rep. of Georgia) and Matt Lamb (Jr., Camden, N.J.). Muzashvili kept his season record of 17-0 unblemished as the No. 1 ranked 197-pounder earned a 18-2 technical fall victory (6:27) over Zeb Miller. Lamb also had little trouble in his bout as he posted a 12-6 victory over Jim Swetter in the heavyweight division, which extended the Spartans lead over the Flashes to 14-3.
Kent closed the lead to 20-12 after a double forfeit in the 125 pound division and a 11-7 victory by Brian Baughman over MSU?s Chris Williams (So., Fowlerville, Mich.) in the 133 pound class. Charlie Sageman (Fr., Saginaw, Mich.) got the Spartans back on track with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Kent?s Mark Wentz in the 141 pound division. Sageman won with a takedown in the match?s closing seconds. Posey followed Sageman giving the Spartans a 29-12 advantage. Gray Maynard (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) wrapped up the scoring with an injury default victory over Anthoney Ralph.
Spartans Head Coach Tom Minkel was pleased with his squad?s performance over the weekend and said Sunday?s meet gave him a chance to use some of the younger wrestlers.
?It was a good weekend for us. Our team is finally starting to mature a little bit,? he said. ?In this meet we tried to give some of our younger kids some needed match experience like Charlie Sageman and John Wechter and I think this meet helped us do that.?
MSU will have a full week to rest before resuming Big 10 play against Penn State on Jan. 16 in State College, Pa.
