Field Hockey Falls To No. 19 Kent State, 4-1

East Lansing, Mich. - The 18th-ranked Michigan State field hockey team lost to No. 19 Kent State, 4-1, Sunday afternoon in Spartan Stadium. MSU falls to 6-5 on the season, while the Golden Flashes improve to 9-3.
Kent State led the entire game, getting the scoring started with 26:41 remaining in the first period. Arlette Van Cleef capped a breakaway by slapping a shot past MSU goalie Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.) from about 15 yards out. Less than five minutes later, KSU's Meagan Class converted on a penalty stroke to give the Flashes a 2-0 advantage. Kent State took a 3-0 lead into halftime after Els Brouwer netted a shot on a penalty corner with only 18 seconds left in the first period. Meagan Class and Kristen Johnson assisted Brouwer on the goal.
The Flashes increased their lead to four goals with 16:28 remaining in the second period on a Kristen Johnson tip-in off a shot from Els Brouwer, who got the assist.
Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) scored the lone goal for the Spartans with 46 seconds left in the contest on a penalty corner. The goal was Cooper's fourth on the season, and she now has a team-leading 10 points. Julia Adams (Soph., N. Vancouver, B.C.) and Jenny Sanders (Soph., W. Vancouver, B.C.) assisted on the goal.
Michigan State returns to action on Thursday, October 5, when it faces the St. Louis Billikens in St. Louis, Mo.
