The Spartans started the scoring early, gaining a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. Maureen Halstead (Jr., N. Dartmouth, Mass.) tipped in a pass from Sophie Rosmalen (Fr., Oss, The Netherlands) at the 33:15 mark to give MSU the early advantage.
The game remained 1-0 until the Hawkeyes scored their lone goal with 16:25 remaining in the second period. Iowa forward Margot McMahon tied the game on a rebound from a failed penalty corner attempt.
The game did not stayed tied for long, however, as Theresa Pusateri (Fr., Homewood, Ill.) netted the game-winning goal for MSU just over two minutes later at the 14:11 mark. The goal was Pusateri's first of her collegiate career.
MSU goalie Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C) had seven saves for the Spartans, while Hawkeye goalkeeper Saleema Rogers posted six stops. The Hawkeyes held a 10-8 advantage in shots, but the Spartans had 11 penalty corners to Iowa's five.
Michigan State returns to action Sunday, October 15, when it faces Ball State at noon in Spartan Stadium.
