NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Sean Patchell (Moonstone, Ont.) scored with 1:19 left in regulation as Michigan State squeaked past Notre Dame, 3-2, at the Joyce Athletic and Convocation Center tonight. The win gives the Spartans (4-1-1 overall/3-1-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) their first back-to-back wins at Notre Dame since the 1996-97 season while extending the losing streak of the Fighting Irish (2-5-1/0-2-0) to three straight.
Andrew Hutchinson (Rochester Hills, Mich) started the game-winning scoring play by holding the puck in the Notre Dame end and sending it behind the Fighting Irish net. John Nail (Brampton, Ont.) picked up the puck behind the cage and hit Patchell with a one-time feed as he was driving to the net.
MSU's power play showed its might on the team's first man-advantage opportunity of the night. With Notre Dame's Connor Dunlop serving a two-minute penalty for tripping, the Spartans' Rustyn Dolyny (Thunder Bay, Ont.) pounced on a loose puck in the slot and tucked a wrist shot just under the crossbar and into the Fighting Irish net at 5:49 of the first period.
Freshman Rob Globke evened the score at the 13:06 mark of the opening frame when he poked a rebound past MSU goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) but the Spartans regained the lead with 36 second left in the period on another power-play goal, this time by Adam Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich.). Hall, stationed on near side about 15 feet to the left of Notre Dame netminder Tony Zasowski, received a pass from behind the net from freshman Jeremy Jackson (Langley, B.C.) and converted for his fourth goal of the year.
Notre Dame evened the score by notching the lone goal of the second period. The Fighting Irish's Ryan Dolder, drifting across the slot, tapped a rebound off an Aaron Gill shot past Miller with 3:39 remaining in the stanza. Miller made a career-high 40 saves for the Spartans. Zasowski stopped 28 shots for Notre Dame.
MSU returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 4) when they travel to Ann Arbor for the first of four meetings with arch-rival Michigan. Faceoff at Yost Ice Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
