EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State hockey head coach Adam Nightingale announced the addition of Andy Contois as assistant coach on Friday. Contois (CON-toys) arrives in East Lansing with a wealth of hockey coaching experience, including stops at Northern Michigan (NCAA), the Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) and the Indy Fuel (ECHL).
"We are excited to add Andy to our staff," said Nightingale. "His experience at the junior, collegiate and professional levels of hockey will be a great asset to our program."
Contois returned to Northern Michigan, his alma mater, ahead of the 2024-25 season, spending the last two seasons on staff with the Wildcats under head coach Dave Shyiak as an assistant coach.
"I'm excited and thankful to Coach Nightingale and his staff for this opportunity," said Contois. "Michigan State is one of the elite programs in college hockey and what Coach Nightingale and his staff have built in East Lansing speaks for itself. I couldn't be more excited to get to work!"
Prior to his return to NMU, Contois spent three seasons as associate head coach of the Youngstown Phantoms, where he coached 20 NHL draft picks and helped the Phantoms to the organization's first Clark Cup title in 2022-23. Youngstown posted a 100-61-16-9 record over his three years on staff.
Contois served as an assistant coach for the ECHL's Indy Fuel for two seasons from 2019-21, aiding the Fuel to a playoff berth in 2020-21. During his two seasons in Indy, the Fuel led the league in AHL call-ups.
Additional coaching stops for Contois include his time as an assistant coach for the Central Illinois Flying Aces (USHL - 2017-19) and Brookings Blizzard (NAHL - 2015-17).
As a player, Contois spent the 2001-02 season at Lake Superior State, where he was a teammate of Nightingale's. Nightingale and Contois also played together on the 1997-98 Marquette Electricians AAA team. Contois later played four seasons at Northern Michigan, posting 97 points over 131 games played, leading the Wildcats in goals during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. He was named an alternate captain in 2005-06.
Contois concluded his playing career after 10 professional seasons spanning the globe, playing three seasons in the ECHL before stops in Finland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Hungary and the Netherlands.
