Michigan State Track and Field Competes at Purdue Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's track and field team finished fourth at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. on Feb. 19. Purdue won the Invitational with a score of 161 points. The Boilermakers were followed by Illinois (101.50), Western Michigan (101.4), Michigan State (77.50) and Alabama-Birmingham (56).
MSU freshman Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) led the Spartans with victories in both the long jump (18' 11.75") triple jump (38' 9.75") events. Williams also placed third in the 60-meter low hurdles with a time of 8.89. In the 600-meter run, sophomore Shanna Ashley (Clarendon, Jamaica) ran to a second-place finish with a time of 1:37.19. Also finishing in the top five was freshman Lynlee Phillips (Shamong, N.J.), who placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 39' 9.25".
Michigan State returns to action Feb. 26-27 (Saturday and Sunday), when it travels to Minneapolis, Minn. for the Big Ten Women's Track and Field Championships.
