Baseball Rebounds Against West Virginia

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team beat West Virginia 6-5 on Friday for its first win of the season. The Spartans are now 1-1 at the UNLV/Coors Classic.
West Virginia took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on two hits, but the Spartans answered in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Don Watchowski's (Shelby Twp. Mich.) single drove in Ted Demetral (Sr., Sterling Hts., Mich.). Later, Joe Albaugh's (Sr., Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) sacrifice fly drove in fellow senior Matt Pisani (Rochester, Mich.). Sophomore Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) also scored to close out the inning to make the score 3-2.
West Virginia added two runs in the top of the sixth and one run in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Don Watchowski hit a two-run single to drive in Demetral and sophomore Chris McCuiston (Birmingham, Mich.) to tie the score at 5-5.
Freshman Bob Malek (Detroit, Mich.) broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with a one out single to score Matt Haynes (So., Midland, Mich.) which gave the Spartans the lead for good, 6-5.
Senior starter Kimya Massey pitched six innings, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs and striking out two. Adam White (Fr., Jenison, Mich.) came in for Massey in the top of the seventh inning and gave up one hit and one run and struck out one. In the ninth, junior Josh Axelson (Brooklyn, Mich.) came in and struck out two and gave up one hit.
The Spartans will take on UNLV/Coors Desert Classic host UNLV tomorrow at 1:30 PST.
