Men's Gymnastics Edged By No. 1 Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The fifth-ranked Michigan State men's gymnastics team battled No. 1 Michigan on Friday, March 10 in Jenison Field House. The meet went down to the final competitor but Michigan was victorious, 229.500-229.250. The score marked a season high for the Spartans as a team. It was also senior day as Brady Grimm, Troy Takagishi, Nate Dotson, Jeff Moomaw, Mike Quarress and Chris Weedon all saw their final regular season action in East Lansing.
Sophomore Jonathan Plante tied the school record on the pommel horse for the third time this season with a 9.950 to win the event. Sophomore Russel Young finished third on the event with a 9.725. Sophomore David Ruiz took second on the floor with a 9.725 and hit the team season high on the high bar with a 9.850. Plante finished second in the event with a 9.625.
The Spartans hit a season high on the rings with a 37.975 led by senior Troy Takaghishi's 9.725. MSU also hit a season best on the parallel bars, scoring a 38.150 as Plante tied his season high with a 9.700. Junior Tom Housley tied for the third-best vault score of the year with a 9.650 to win that event. Senior Mike Quarress was second with a 9.625. Freshman Brad Golden was solidly consistent, scoring the third-best all-around score of the year with a 56.300.
The Spartans host the Big Ten Championships next Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18 in Jenison Field House. Action both days begins at 7 p.m.
