Wrestling In 11th Place After Sesssion One at NCAA Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team is in 11th place with 14 points after the first session of wrestling at the 2000 NCAA Championships at the Kiel Center in St. Louis. Oklahoma State leads the team standings with 38 points, while Iowa and Iowa State are tied for second with 30 points.
Individually, three Spartans remain alive in the championship brackets.
Junior 133-pounder Pat McNamara (Jordan, Minn.), the No. 3 seed, advanced with a pair of wins. He scored a 7-3 win over Shawn Kegel of Buffalo in the first round and a 5-2 second-round victory over Scott Moore of Penn State.
Senior Nick Muzashvili (Unadilla, N.Y.), the third seed at 197, did not give up a point in the first two rounds, scoring a 16-0 technical fall against Arizona State's Erik Gladish and a 14-0 major decision against Joe Downey of Buffalo.
Junior heavyweight Matt Lamb (East Lansing, Mich.), the No. 11 seed, got a 3-2 decision over Mike Rossow of Eastern Illinois and a 7-0 win against Russ Davie of Cleveland State to remainin the championship draw.
All three wrestled third-round matches late Thursday night.
Also getting a win in the championship bracket before a loss sent him to the consolation bracket was 11th-seeded freshman 157-pounder Gray Maynard (Las Vegas, Nev.), who scored a 1:58 fall over Scott Frohardt of Air Force in the first round before falling to No. 7-seed Cole Clauson of Iowa State in the second round.
Junior Mike Castillo (Rochester, Mich.) suffered a first-round loss, but bounced back to get wins in the first two rounds of the consolation bracket.
Freshman 149-pounder Karl Nadolsky (Holland, Mich.), senior 165-pounder Greg DeGrand (Saline, Mich.) and senior 174-pounder Will Hill (Indianapolis, Ind.) all lost first-round matches and were taking part in consolation bouts Thursday evening.
Consolation matches were continuing late into Thursday evening, with Session II not scheduled to be completed until after midnight eastern time.
Session III will begin at noon eastern time on Friday with quarterinal matches, and Session IV gets underway Friday evening with semifinal matches at 6:30.
