West Lafayette, Ind. - The Michigan State baseball team (5-15, 1-3 Big Ten) defeated Purdue, 8-3, on March 26 for its first Big Ten victory of the season.
MSU scored two runs to break a scoreless tie in the fourth, and held the lead the entire game. Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.) led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Bob Malek (Detroit, Mich.) and scored on a double-play groundout. The Spartans added another run as Chris McCuiston (Birmingham, Mich.) blasted a home run to left-centerfield, his first on the season.
MSU increased its lead to six after scoring four runs in the fifth. Two bases loaded walks by Pisani and Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) brought in two runs, followed by a passed-ball that scored Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Pisani scored the final run of the inning, crossing the plate after an error by Purdue third-baseman Daryl Hallada.
Purdue (13-7, 3-1 Big Ten) got on the board in the seventh, scoring its only run against Spartan starter Jon Huizinga (Wayland, Mich.). Huizinga (2-3) allowed eight hits and pitched seven innings in the win.
Michigan State added two more insurance runs in the ninth. Joe Albaugh (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) singled to rightfield, knocking in both Malek and Pisani for his eighth and ninth RBI on the year.
The Spartans pounded out 10 hits off four Boilermaker pitchers. Starter Russ Morgan took the loss for Purdue (3-3).
MSU returns to action Tuesday, March 28 against Eastern Michigan. The game is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start and will played in Ypsilanti, Mich.
